If you go shopping in any toy store, you can see clearly the different games and toys for boys and girls: there are a lot of pink toys on one side of the store for girls; and dark-colored cars, guns, and soldiers for boys. Some big stores with toys may even have a pink floor for girls and a blue floor for boys. In fact, it is difficult to buy a toy for a girl that is not pink.

Some people think that too much pink is bad for girls. Sue Palmer, writer of Toxic Childhood, is very worried that most girls over the age of three are crazy about the color. According to some scientists, this happens for two reasons. Firstly, most companies offer too many products in pink. Also, many parents think their little daughter looks cute in pink. Sue Palmer says that girls at this age cannot make proper decisions by themselves, but the pink can affect (影响) the choices and the decisions they will make in the future.

Some parents are worried too—for example, Vanessa Holburn, thirty-two, who has two girls under the age of four. Their bedrooms are a sea of pink and Vanessa is not happy. “Pink says that you are soft and gentle. Blue says that you are strong and powerful. I want my daughters to be strong and powerful. I’m worried that pink will not help them with that,” she says.

But not everyone thinks there’s something wrong with pink. Grayson Turner is a father of three girls and he isn’t worried at all. “People forget that things change all the time,” he says. “My girls used to love pink when they were little, but as they get older, they change.” Turner explains that his twelve-year-old daughter never wears pink clothes anymore. “This love of pink is just a fashion and all fashions change,” he adds. “It’s only since the 1940s that people have started dressing girls in pink—before that it was a color for boys.”

In your dreams, you may clearly see something or hear someone talking. But what about smells? Can you ever remember smells from your dreams?

A study published in 1896 looked at different sensory (感官的) experiences in dreams. It found that visual (视觉的) experience mainly controls one’s dreams. It takes up about 85 percent, while auditory (听觉的) experience makes up 69 percent, and smell only 7 percent.

But why? Scientists from the University of Illinois, US, have a theory based on what is know about the brain.

In our brain, there is a special part called the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层). It is linked to our feelings. As much as two-thirds of the cerebral cortex works in vision. So vision appears often in dreams. Auditory experience is closely tied to language, and language is processed entirely in the cerebral cortex.

Smell, on the other hand, has little to do with the cerebral cortex. It connects directly to the memory and emotional systems. That is why a smell can sometimes bring back a distant memory.

Another possibility is that perhaps smell is not easily affected by our imagination. For example, close your eyes and imagine your favorite dish. What do you get? It is easy to think about what it looks like. But it is not as easy to imagine its smell.

The vision and auditory senses are part of a complex process inside the brain. But smell is a direct measurement (计量) of chemicals in the air. There is less imagination involved in smell. Therefore, smell might be less influenced by the brain activity that happens while dreaming. It is similar to taste and touch. That is why you don’t usually have the experience of taste and touch in your dreams.

1.Which experience mainly controls one’s dreams, according to the 1896 study? ________
A.Smell.B.Vision.C.Hearing.D.Taste and touch.
2.Which of the following is TRUE about the US scientists’ brain theory? ________
A.Less than half of the cerebral cortex works in vision.
B.Auditory experience is not tied to language.
C.Smell has almost nothing to do with the cerebral cortex.
D.It’s difficult to imagine what things in your dreams look like.
3.According to paragraph 6 and 7, it’s easier to imagine a dish’s ________.
A.look than its smellB.smell than its look
C.taste than its smellD.smell than its taste
4.What is the best title for the story?
A.How Does the Cerebral Cortex Work?
B.Why Can’t You Smell in Your Dreams?
C.What Experience Happens Most Often in Dreams?
D.Why Can’t You Remember Smells from Your Dreams?

Have you ever been to a swamp (沼泽)? The book Swampfire: A Shockoe Slip Gang Adventure will tell you all about it.

It tells the story of Sally and Andrew, who are also amateur teen detectives (青少年业余侦探). They are also known as
“The Shockoe Slip Gang” a name given to them by reporters after their last successful case.

They are excited to return to their cousin Anne’s farm in Virginia this summer. Mostly they are looking forward to camping out in the largely unexplored Swamp near the farm with their friend Robin.    Sally and Andrew respect Robin because he and his parents live in the swamp, and he knows how to keep alive in the great outdoors. The three friends are even more excited to explore the swamp when hearing of a recent ghost sighting.    Robin even says he has caught sight of the creature, which he says is actually a beautiful red-gold horse! But before leaving for the camping trip. Anne warns Sally, Andrew and Robin about the possibility of swamp fires, which are dangerous but also attractive.    The Native Americans who used to live in the area believed that “a swamp fire was a special kind of fire, and meant something special was going to happen.”

When Bambi woke up and saw snow on the forest floor, he felt sad. It was still winter!

His mum had found a nice place for the winter, but it was difficult for him to meet his friends. It always took him a long time to walk through the woods. The worst thing was the frozen lake.

But on that cold morning, Bambi wanted to fight with his fear. He stood bravely in front of the ice-covered lake. He could see his friends, the squirrel and the rabbit, playing on the opposite side!

Bambi put one of his feet on the ice, and then a second and a third. But suddenly, he fell down! He tried and tried but still failed. He decided to try again the next day.

We have more or less trouble to face in our life. These things may give you too much stress which is bad for your development. So, how can we students deal with them?

As a student, schoolwork and grades are at the top of your stress list. You have a lot of schoolwork to do every day. Although your grades are not terrible, you may still worry that you are not as good as you expect. Why not make a daily or weekly plan for schoolwork? In this way. you can save more time to study and even avoid being too tired by taking some breaks. Don’t be too strict with yourself. Just do what you can do. If you meet something beyond your ability, just go to your teacher for help—pick his or her brain or make any questions you don’t understand clear.

Have you ever been worried about not having enough friends in school or not being in the same class with your best friends? Not getting along well with new classmates is also our common stress. It is important to choose your circle of friends. Don’t hide yourself in your own world and try to make friends when you join in after-school activities. Make plans to meet your friends from other classes during break time. Know that everyone is different — do not compare yourself with others. You’ll be less stressed that way.

Unhealthy eating habits and lack (缺乏) of sleep can also lead to stress. You are what you eat. Make healthy food choices that you can enjoy. Set a certain time to go to bed every night. Don’t play computer games before you sleep. Do see a doctor if your sleeping problem continues.
