What would life be like if you were a rocker, a soccer player, a professor(教授) at Stanford University, and a Nobel Prize winner? Carolyn Bertozzi from the US lives such a cool life!

Bertozzi, 56, wins this year’s Nobel Prize in chemistry and becomes this year’s only female(女性) winner in science and the eighth female to receive the chemistry prize in history.

Bertozzi won the prize for studying the sugar coats of cells(细胞). She has found a smart way to connect cells together. This finding helps to develop better tests for serious diseases like cancer.

However, Bertozzi said she only fell in love with chemistry until her second year at Harvard University. “Most of my classmates thought the class was very difficult. But I liked it a lot because in my eyes the problems were challenging even though it usually took me long hours to solve them.”

Besides doing science studies, Bertozzi has lived a colorful life. She was a keyboarder in a rock band and she also played soccer, winning an athletic scholarship from Harvard.

Moreover, Bertozzi never forgets her job as a female scientist. “In the late 1980s, only 10 percent of the students were females,” she told Chemical & Engineering News. “There were maybe only one or two females in a lab, so we tried to support each other by starting a monthly get-together. Now, I’m so glad to see more and more females taking part in science.” In 2022, Bertozzi won an award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science for her work to increase diversity(性别多元) in science.

Thank you, Principal Xu, all the teachers and most importantly, the class of 2019. If I can’t make my speech fantastic, I will at least try to make it short.

It’s been nearly 40 years since I became a member of the army. You may be wondering how I have won so many honors as a commander-in chief (总司令). In fact, it all began from the half a _______ basic training, which I will never forget. The training included midnight swims in the cold water, days without _______ and long painful runs in the soft sand. I always felt cold, wet sleepy and painful. To me, the basic training was a lifetime of challenges that _______ six months. And today, I’d like to talk about one little thing which I think is one of the most important points leading to _______.

Every morning, my instructors (教官) would _______ in our rooms. The first thing they did was to _______ our beds. The corners would be square. The covers would be pulled tight, and the pillow (枕头) would be in the center, just under the headboard. It was a(n) _______ task. But every morning we were required to make our beds _______. It seemed a little funny, but the wisdom of this simple act has been proved to _______ many times over.

If you make your bed every morning, you will have completed the ________ task of the day. It will bring you a small sense of success, and it will ________ you to do another task, and another. At last, one task completed will have ________ into many tasks completed. Making your bed will prove ________.

Even now, I still start my day with making the bed to perfection. So if you have ________ day, you will come home to a bed that is made—that you made—and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better. So ________ off by making your bed. I hope all of you will have a brighter future!

Kindness is necessary and important, and usually success lies in kindness. As parents and teachers, we also teach children from a young age to “be kind to one another” and “treat others the way you want to be treated.”

Research has shown that kindness can not only help us to have a better relationship with others but also make it possible for us to live more happily. According to the Mayo Clinic, when we perform acts of kindness, the pleasure center in our brain becomes active, giving out the stress-reducing hormone(激素). That’s why a volunteer always says he will get a strong feeling of satisfaction after offering help. And what is even greater is that kindness seldom stops with just one person. People will also be glad to help others after they receive an act of kindness. Then here comes a question: Could kindness be harmful to us? Let’s think about it.

You are the new person on the team and you want to be well-liked and respected by your teammates. You are a kind person and tell your team, “Let me know how I can help you; I’m always available to help.” Though you may truly mean this, there are unlucky people in this world who will regard your kindness as a weakness. This can lead to you being taken advantage of by others.

What about a year later? You have been in your position now for one year, and you are working with the same team. You are noticing that your teammates continue asking for your help over and over again. In fact, the only time they communicate with you is when they need something. You have been helpful to your teammates but there has rarely been any return from them.

In general, it is wonderful to be kind to others, and your kind acts will be appreciated and, perhaps, paid off. However, you need to be willing to say “no” when realizing that your plate is already too full. When people ask you a hand, think it over if you have the time, energy, and attention to give to them. To truly be kind, sometimes you need to be more comfortable saying “no” to others and saying “yes” to yourself.

1.What does the Mayo Clinic think of kindness?
A.It does good to our mind.B.It adds stress to us.
C.It adds years to people’s life.D.It makes people unlucky.
2.What might the new person feel one year later?
A.Thankful.B.Lucky.C.Disappointed.D.Helpful.
3.What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean?
A.When you’re too full to eat anything.B.When you have too much food.
C.When you need to ask for a hand.D.When you’re really busy and tired.
4.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Say “No” to kindness!B.Are we tiring ourselves with kindness?
C.Kindness is really important!D.Never fail to offer your kindness!

I am the proud owner of three pet dogs. Over the years, I have watched their activities carefully that help me when I travel around the world.
One important lesson that my dog, Cody, taught me is how to deal with little problems in life. From the way he has dealt with his recent serious illness, I have learned how I can face difficult situations when travelling. I’ve learned to try to deal with bad situations in a peaceful way, such as when we miss a train, lose things, and so on.
Another dog of mine, Preston, loves to walk around the yard, spending hours smelling every corner and finding out what it means to him. Taking it slowly is another lesson that’s been very hard for me to learn. As an active traveller, I am usually experiencing less by speeding through everything instead of slowly getting to know a place. Even if it means that you won’t see as many things, going slowly when you travel is the best way to really get to know a new place. Rushing around a foreign city isn’t fun at all.

Something bad happened to my dog, Mona, before. And while she has become more relaxed over the years, she is still kind of on edge. She is very careful when faced with any new situation. But once she’s used to her new environment, she is fine. The same goes for our travel experience. No matter where we go, we need to deal with new situations carefully—while at the same time not letting anything turn into fear.

Many thanks to my pets. To me, pets are not just pets, but a part of the family. After all, with the help of them, I am able to learn a lot and live differently.
1.One of the three dogs, Cody, ________.
A.once had a serious illnessB.is interested in travelling
C.once missed a trainD.is unable to deal with new situations
2.From Preston, the writer learned that one should ________.
A.smell every corner around the yardB.travel to a foreign city
C.see as many things as possible when travellingD.travel around slowly and have fun
3.Although Mona has become more relaxed over the years, she is still kind of _________.
A.hungryB.nervousC.activeD.angry

Many Chinese words have directions in them and there is lots of history hidden behind.

East and West

When going shopping, Chinese people say “maidongxi”. One theory (说法) says that in the Tang Dynasty, there were two popular markets, the East Market and the West Market, in Chang’an. When shopping, people usually went to the East Market first, and then went to the West Market. As time went by, people started to describe (描述) shopping as “maidongxi”.

Left or right

In Chinese, we say “yijianxiangzuo” (意见相左) when we have different opinions. Why is it not “yijianxiangyou”?

Most people are right-handed. They feel uncomfortable if they use their left hand to write. So in ancient Chinese, “left” means being different. If people don’t accept (接受) common beliefs, we say they are following “pangmenzuodao” (旁门左道).

“Left” and “right” also have something to do with people’s social status (地位). In ancient China, “right” can mean higher status than “left”. For example, the character “佑” means a person in a higher status would protect (保护) someone in a lower status.

Up or down

We use “shangcesuo” to mean “go to the bathroom” and “xiachufang” to mean go to the kitchen. Why?

In ancient times, the gate of the house would face south, with the bathroom in the northeastern part of the house and the kitchen in the southeastern part. On maps, north is usually at the top. So we talk about the north as “shang” and the south as “xia”. People would say they were going up to the bathroom and down to the kitchen.

“Shang” and “xia” also show social status. For example, “huangshang” (皇上) means the emperor and “dianxia” (殿下) means the princes who had a lower status than the emperor.

1.People use “left” to show ________.
a. difference b. protection c. different directions d. low status
A.adB.abC.bcD.bd
2.What was an ancient house like in China?
A.B.C.D.
3.Which of the following sentences is TRUE?
A.In the Tang Dynasty people usually went to the West Market first.
B.The princes have the same social status as emperors in ancient China.
C.Most people feel uncomfortable if they use their left hand to write.
D.People will have low status if they don’t accept common beliefs.
4.Which Chinese phrase shows the cultural meaning of Chinese words mentioned in the passage?
A.左顾右盼B.雪上加霜C.无出其右D.日落西山
