Everyone faces difficulties in their life. Daniel Kish was born with a special eye illness and lost his eyesight when he was only 14 months old.
Soon after, however, he started to do an amazing thing. He learned to make clicks (咔哒声) with his tongue(舌头)to help him move around. Kish now moves about using sonar (唢呐). He is so good at it that he can ride a bicycle by himself on public roads. And he started the organization World Access for the Blind (WAFTB) in 2000, teaching others how to use sonar. In the interview with National Geographic, he explains how the sonar works.
“When I make a click sound, it produces sound waves. These waves reflect (反射) off surfaces around and return to my ears. My brain then deals with the sound and turns it into pictures in my mind. Each click is like a camera flash, which helps me make a 3-D picture of my surroundings for hundreds of feet. It’s like having a conversation with the environment.”
Kish feels it is exciting to ride a bike using sonar, although he needs to click twice a sound, much more than he usually does. “It may sound a bit dangerous to move around the world in this way,” he says. “But most people in the world live in fear of things that they imagine. I love hiking and mountain-biking. I go almost everywhere. And I’ve never had an accident and hurt myself.”
He is happy to be able to help more blind children to improve their life. “We’ve served over 10,000 students in nearly 40 countries,” he tells the reporter. “Many students are surprised how quickly results come. Seeing isn’t in the eyes. It’s in the mind.”

Great Changes in My Growth
As time goes by, I am not the little kid any more. I am quite different from what I used to be.
In the past,
Buck could not read the newspapers. So he did not know that trouble was coming. The trouble was for every dog with strong muscles (肌肉) and warm long hair, from Seattle to southern California. Some men had found a yellow metal (金属) in the Arctic darkness, and thousands of other men were rushing there. Those men wanted dogs that were heavy, with strong muscles for working hard and furry coats to protect them from the cold.
Buck lived at a big house in a sunny valley in California which was owned by Judge Miller. And Buck ruled over it all. He was born there, and had lived there for the four years of his life. There were many other dogs, but they lived together in the Kennels (狗窝), or inside the house. But Buck was neither a house dog nor a kennel dog. The whole of Judge Miller’s lands was his. Buck was the king over all the crawling, flying things of Judge Miller’s lands, humans included.
His father, Elmo, a huge St Bernard, had been Judge Miller’s inseparable (不可分离的) partner. And when he died, Buck took his father’s place. He was not so large—he weighed only sixty kilograms—for his mother, Shen, had been a Scottish sheepdog. He had had a good life and he was proud of himself, for he had not become a house dog. Hunting and other outdoor activities had strengthened his muscles, and swimming had made him healthy.
This was Buck in the autumn of 1897, when the discovery of gold in the Klondike brought men from everywhere to the frozen north. But Buck couldn’t read the newspapers. And he did not know that Manuel, one of the gardener’s helpers, was not a good man. Manuel gambled (赌博) and wasted the little money he had. And one time when Judge Miller was away on business, and his sons were busy with an athletics (竞技) club, Manuel did something terrible. No one saw him and Buck go off on what Buck thought was a walk. No one saw them arrive at the railway station, where Manuel sold Buck to a man who was waiting for him.
Manuel put a rope round Buck’s neck, under his collar. Buck accepted this because he knew Manuel, but when the rope was given to another man, he growled (发出低吠声) dangerously. And when the rope was tightened (紧绷) round neck, he started to choke (窒息) and jumped at the man in anger. The man fought him off and forced Buck to lie on his back, and tightened the rope even more. Buck had never been treated so badly in his life, and he had never been so angry. But then his strength drained (消耗) away and he soon became unconscious (失去意识的). He was still unconscious when the train arrived and the two men threw him into the baggage car.
When Buck woke up, the train was still moving. The man was sitting and watching him, but Buck was too quick for him and he bit the man’s hand hard. Then the rope was pulled again and Buck had to let go.
That evening, the man took Buck to the back room of a bar in San Francisco. The barman looked at the man’s hand and trousers covered in blood.
