Shhh, it’s sleeping. Is it hibernating? A tree squirrel, like this red squirrel in Scotland, doesn’t hibernate during the winter. Hibernating is animals spending winter in a deep sleep. Most ground squirrels like hibernating, but the red squirrel cares about where it sleeps. It builds its home in the hole of an evergreen tree, high above the ground. This little sleeper is using its tail to keep warm. In winter, its orangered fur is often coloured with a little grey.
In Scotland and elsewhere in the United Kingdom, the native (本土的) red squirrel is threatened (威胁) by the North American grey squirrel. The North American grey squirrel takes food and living space from the red squirrel. While there are millions of the North American grey squirrels in the UK, only 120, 000 to 160, 000 red squirrels live, about threequarters of them in Scotland.
