Shhh, it’s sleeping. Is it hibernating? A tree squirrel, like this red squirrel in Scotland, doesn’t hibernate during the winter. Hibernating is animals spending winter in a deep sleep. Most ground squirrels like hibernating, but the red squirrel cares about where it sleeps. It builds its home in the hole of an evergreen tree, high above the ground. This little sleeper is using its tail to keep warm. In winter, its orangered fur is often coloured with a little grey.

The North American grey squirrel takes food and living space from the red squirrel. Mary and Jenny lived next to each other. They also studied in the same class. But Mary did not play with Jenny.
