Technological change is everywhere and affects every aspect of life, mostly for the better. However, social changes brought about by new technology are often mistaken for a change in attitudes.

An example at hand is the involvement of parents in the lives of their children who are attending college. Surveys (调查) on this topic suggests that parents today continue to be “very” or “somewhat” overly-protective even after their children move into college dormitories. The same surveys also indicate that the rate of parental involvement is greater today than it was a generation ago. This is usually interpreted as a sign that today’s parents are trying to manage their children’s lives past the point where this behavior is appropriate.

However, greater parental involvement does not necessarily indicate that parents are failing to let go of their “adult” children.

In the context (背景) of this discussion, it seems valuable to first find out the cause of change in the case of parents’ involvement with their grown children. If parents of earlier generations had wanted to be in touch with their college-age children frequently, would this have been possible? Probably not. On the other hand, does the possibility of frequent communication today mean that the urge to do so wasn’t present a generation ago? Many studies show that older parents - today’s grandparents - would have called their children more often if the means and cost of doing so had not been a barrier.

Furthermore, studies show that finances are the most frequent subject of communication between parents and their college children. The fact that college students are financially dependent on their parents is nothing new; nor are requests for more money to be sent from home. This phenomenon is neither good nor bad; it is a fact of college life, today and in the past.

Thanks to the advanced technology, we live in an age of bettered communication. This has many implications well beyond the role that parents seem to play in the lives of their children who have left for college. But it is useful to bear in mind that all such changes come from the technology and not some imagined desire by parents to keep their children under their wings.

1.The surveys inform us of ______.
A.the development of technology
B.the changes of adult children’s behavior
C.the parents’ over-protection of their college children
D.the means and expenses of students’ communication
2.The writer believes that ______.
A.parents today are more protective than those in the past
B.the disadvantages of new technology outweigh its advantages
C.technology explains greater parental involvement with their children
D.parents’ changed attitudes lead to college children’s delayed Independence
3.What attitude does the writer hold towards greater parental involvement according to the last paragraph?
A.negativeB.supportive
C.understandableD.sceptical
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Technology or Attitude
B.Dependence or Independence
C.Family Influence or Social Changes
D.College Management or Communication Advancement
5.Which of the following shows the development of ideas in this passage?

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) is one of the most popular of the Post-Impressionist painters. He is famed for the great vitality of his works which are characterized by expressive and emotive use of brilliant color and energetic application of impastoed (厚原料的) paint.

Below are some famous pictures painted by Vincent and the poetic lyrics(歌词) to Don McLean’s hit song Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) in the famous cartoon film 《Loving Vincent》 .

Vincent
Starry, starry night,
Paint your palette(画板) blue and grey,
Look out on a summer’s day,
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
Shadows on the hills,
Sketch the trees and the daffodils,
Catch the breeze and the winter chill,
In colors on the snowy linen land.
Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity(精神正常)
How you tied to set them free.
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now.
Starry, starry night.
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze,
Swirling clouds in violet haze(阴霾,疑惑),
Reflect in Vincent’s eyes of china blue.
Colors changing hue,
morning. field of amber(黄色的) grain,
Weathered faces lined in pain,
Are soothed(抚慰) beneath the artist’s loving hand.
For they could not love you,
But still your love was true.
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night,
You took your life, as lovers often do.
But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you.
Now I think I know what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen,
They're not listening sill
Perhaps they never will…

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

I was always a big fan of football, and watching a game at the stadium was obviously one of the best ways to be free from work and relax. Therefore,as soon as I heard the news that there would be a game of our home team against the team from Mississippi, I booked a front-row seat, excited about having a fantastic weekend I was excited when I sat in the stadium.

When the game began, however, I discovered that I was sitting directly in front of a Super-lungs. He seemed like a nice guy. But his idea of having fun at a football game was obviously nothing like mine,or most well-behaved football fans’. He yelled (大喊) non-stop as loud as he could. He yelled at the coaches, the players, the officials and the Mississippi State fans. Always at the top of his lungs.

The Super-lungs made an surprising performance and kept it for us for the entire 90 minutes and never showed any sign of tiredness. He was caught up in his own world so he failed to notice he was ruining (破坏) hundreds of others’ experience of watching the game.

I felt that my ear drums (耳鼓) almost got broken. His mouth was only two feet away from my ears. For a while I thought of shouting back and stopping him yelling. People around were turning to look at him, and I could read their thoughts: “Is he never going to stop?” And he seemed not to see those looks.

At halftime I escaped by walking for a few minutes outside the stadium. I was thinking of finding an empty seat in another part of the stadium. However, to my disappointment, the seats were all taken. I had no choice but to go back to the Super-lungs. When returning to my seat, I missed my steps and fell heavily on the stairs. As I was struggling (挣扎) to stand up, a pair of huge hands helped me from behind.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I’m smaller than everyone else my age. When I walk in the halls at school, I have to squeeze in between the bigger kids to get by. At the playground, sometimes even little kids try to boss me around. Mia, my best friend, is so tall that when she walks, I have to jog to keep up with her.

I used to try to make myself taller whenever I could. My posture was perfect, straight as an arrow. I hung from the tree in our backyard to stretch out my arms and legs. I even ate all my vegetables. Every day I measured myself, but I was the same height every time. Frustrating!

“Don’t worry,” Mom always said. “Being small has its advantages.” “Really? I could never notice any.”

One day, Mrs. Alvarez announced to the class that we’d be putting on a spring play. I practiced all the lines. But at the audition (试演), when I walked up to the stage, Mrs. Alvarez cried, “You’ll be perfect as the elf (小精灵)! You’re just the right size for the costume.” I even never got a chance to deliver the practiced lines. Back home I grumbled (咕哝) to mum that I was made an elf. But she bet I would be the best elf. To please her, I went to rehearsals (排练), though I only had two lines.

Mia got the lead role-a girl wandering through a magical fairy forest in search of her lost dog. In the last scene, she finds a box under a giant mushroom, and when she opens it, her dog jumps out. Mrs. Alvarez’s dog, Prince, played the dog role. She brought him to all the rehearsals, and when he wasn’t onstage, we got to play with him, but he seemed to like me best.

The night of the show, my first line came early, “Let’s ask the Fairy Queen!” Since my only other line was toward the end, I waited offstage, playing with Prince.

Finally, the grand end came, and Prince was brought onstage inside the box.

It seemed interesting that on the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s departure for France, the Indian and French governments issued similar statements on the prospects of an agreement on the purchase of the Rafale aircraft: that no single deal should be allowed to overshadow the Prime Minister’s visit. Indeed, India-France relations are much bigger than any one contract; they represent the cultural affinityl (密切关系) and historic relations between two vibrant (醒目的) democracies. The items on the Prime Minister’s agenda reflected the range of commonalities — from the preservation of ancient architecture to the development of Puducherry and Chandigarh as smart cities; from the construction of semi-high-speed railway lines to cooperation on a space mission to Mars; from discussing anti-terror training to tackling climate change through renewable technologies and a robust nuclear partnership. The economic aspect of the relationship has been ignored for too long. Although more than a thousand French companies have a total investment of about $20 billion in India, bilateral trade is worth just $8 billion. While all this deserved attention, it was disappointing that the Prime Minister put the spotlight back on defence ties by making a surprise announcement on the purchase of 36 Rafale aircraft as the highlight of his talks with President Francois Hollande. If the outright purchase was a crucial military necessity, it could have been discussed a few weeks before or after the visit, as a political push for the deal was secondary to the technical specifications and delivery requirements. Moreover, the deal, which involves purchasing products off the shelf abroad, detracts from Mr. Modi’s “Make in India” initiative (主动性).

The breakthrough on the Areva nuclear equipment deal, on the other hand, shows the positive outcome of Mr. Modi’s and Mr. Hollande’s political push, combined with a “Make in India” twist. As in the case of Indo-U.S. nuclear negotiations, Mr. Modi and Mr. Hollande decided to clear the logjam by splitting the problem into different silos — allowing for separate mechanisms for the pricing issues and for the technical and legal aspects. The supplementary deal involving Areva and L&T producing heavy forging metal casing for nuclear reactors is an important step in localising some of the expensive parts. During his visit to Canada, where he hopes to sign a deal for uranium supplies, Mr. Modi means to take forward his plan to increase nuclear energy production. Given this objective, it may be useful for him to round off the visit by discussing his nuclear energy plans in Germany as well, which is now winding down on nuclear power but is at the cutting edge of nuclear safety research for the European Pressurised Reactors that are being considered for India.

1.Which of the following got the whole attention other than many important deals?
A.Cooperation on a space mission to Mars.B.Anti-terror training.
C.Purchase of Rafale Fighters.D.General VK Singh’s remark on the Press.
2.Which of the following option is on the agenda of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi as stated above?
A.Preservation of ancient architecture.
B.Development of Puducherry and Chandigarh as smart cities.
C.Construction of semi-high-speed railway lines.
D.All of the above.
3.Choose an appropriate Title for the above passage:       .
A.The Big DealB.Modi’s SuccessC.Modi’s tour to FranceD.Rafale and beyond
4.Which of the following is the meaning of the word ‘logjam’?
A.A long traffic jam during Prime Minister Modi’s visit.
B.A state of mind where you cannot decide what to do.
C.A situation that seems like unable to be settled.
D.A place from where The French President used to work.

Jobs that use both technical and creative thinking are among the fastest-growing and highest-paying ones, according to a new report from Burning Glass Technologies, a job market analytics (分析) company in Boston.

It studied millions of job postings to better understand the skills companies require. What they discovered was that many want workers with experience in such new abilities as big-data (数据) gathering and analytics, or design using digital technology.

Burning Glass came up with the term “hybrid jobs” to describe these kinds of positions, which require skills not normally found together. For example, these hybrid jobs might require people with skills in data science and advertising, or engineering and sales. “The jobs of the future don’t involve just one skill,” says Matt Sigelman, chief manager of Burning Glass.

The company expects general job growth of about 10% between 2018 and 2028, but the hybrid jobs by 21%. What’s more, hybrid jobs pay more than positions that call for a traditional set of skills. For example, a marketing manager mastering a database program gets paid 41% more than a traditional one, with an average yearly salary of $100, 000. Moreover, an engineer who improves her sales skills and becomes a consulting engineer for a software company can more than double her pay from $180, 000 to $400, 000.

While data shows that workers who fail to update their skills will be able to find fewer jobs, people in hybrid jobs are less likely to become out of date, with only 12% possibility of being replaced by machine, compared with 42% for general jobs, says Burning Glass. Hybrid jobs are mostly not beginner roles, so they mainly go to workers with years of experience and, most importantly, more training after leaving college. That means workers, bosses and educators will have to think about how to better prepare people for these roles.

1.Why did the company research into job advertisements?
A.To understand the growth of best paid workers.
B.To compare workers’ experience with new abilities.
C.To find out companies’ requirements about skills.
D.To tell the possible changes in future job market.
2.Which of the following jobs can be hybrid?
A.Data engineer.
B.Machine operator.
C.Marketing manager.
D.Medical consultant.
3.How much is a traditional marketing manager possibly paid every year?
A.$180, 000.B.$71, 000.C.$41, 000.D.$10, 000.
4.Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A.How to Get Trained for Jobs
B.The Skills for “Hybrid” Jobs
C.Future Jobs Requiring “Hybrid” Skills
D.Tips on Finding Fastest-Growing Jobs
