Circles can be found everywhere in the natural world, but with no exact way to measure (测量) them. They are very mysterious (神秘的) and might never be completely understood. When you take the distance around a circle and divide it by the distance across a circle, you will always get Pi. While Pi is about 3.14 when rounded, it is endlessly long. With the help of computers, mathematicians (数学家) have been able to work Pi out to over a trillion decimal places (小数点后万亿位). This makes Pi mysterious, even to the most famous mathematicians.

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14, since the way we write this date, 3/14, looks just like Pi when rounded. In 2009, U.S. Congress voted to formally make March 14 Pi Day. Certain parts of the world — places where March 14 is written as 14/3 — will instead celebrate Pi Approximation Day which takes place on July 22nd because of the division (除法) result of 22/7.

Pi has appeared in movies, comics, music, and more. “In modern movies, any time the filmmaker wants to create a sense of mystery, the symbol Pi is used,” says Blatner. People also love working to remember the digits (数位) of Pi and competing against others to see who can remember most. The Guinness World Record for remembering the most digits of Pi is held by Lu Chao of China, who successfully remembered Pi to nearly 67,000 decimal places.

Above all, Pi Day is about having fun with the number, according to Blatner. People will celebrate Pi Day by eating pie and throwing pie, and with fun Pi-related games. Princeton, New Jersey holds a series of Pi-related festivities. Events this year include a surprise birthday party for Albert Einstein whose birthday also falls on March 14, and a “Walk a Pi Event” where participants will walk 3.14 miles together. Just like the number itself, the possibilities for Pi Day are truly endless.

Since it was first published in 1843, the novella (短篇故事）A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens has been loved by millions of people, and perhaps has encouraged them to love more and give more. Dickens is known as the best author of the Victorian times writing on social issues influencing his times.

Charles was no strangers to poverty. His father had been thrown in prison for debt in 1824, and he had to drop school and start working as the second oldest child of eight children. ①

All his hopes and dreams of making something of his life were ended. It seemed not an adult in the world cared for his hopes or his abilities, not even his own parents. He wondered “how he could be so easily thrown away at such a young age”. ②

Eventually, he started writing stories for the papers. With money coming in and then children,Charles had taken a mortgage(抵押贷款）on a big house. His next novel was not as well received and his future payments were cut. Charles needed to make money and he needed to make it fast. Criticism (批评）of his new novel hurt his confidence; it is not easy to write when you are down and struggling. He needed new ideas and inspiration(激励), but he was running out of time.③

He happened to find the idea of a Christmas story that could show this and warm the hearts of the poor and open the hearts of the selfish. He needed to write fast and that is probably why we only have a novella, but a novella was enough to share his story. He filled the story with character and scenes which he had already written about in his other stories, Scrooge, the main character,is a selfish self-centred man who hates Christmas the tine of giving . His late business partner, also a greedy man, comes back from the dead as a ghost to warn Scrooge.You will need to read the story yourself to see how Scrooge finally changes his ways.

The plan to save himself financially also saved Dickens emotionally. As he wrote about Christmas and the wonderful time of gift giving, family gathering, carol singing and feast sharing, his own heart was cheered and he remembered those things that really mattered to him. He loved writing the book and produced a special story, which is still loved around the world. New inspiration and fresh confidence set Dickens on a new path to success.

Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer —driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Companies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and they just need to see if they value for money, work out insurance（保险）issues, and run final tests to check if they can run alongside human driven cars on the road.

So how do they work? The cars have sensors(应器）all around which can find other cars and objects in the road. Sensors on the wheels also help when parking, so the cars know how far it is from the outside of the road or other parked cars. Road signs are read by by cameras, and satellite navigation systems are used, so the cars know how to get where you want to go. All you have to do is type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors and cameras and works out when to speed up, stop, and turn.

Sound like your idea of heaven（天堂）? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while “driving” would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn’t have to worry about remembering directions to where you are going. In addition, computers would be better drivers than humans —they would obey the speed limit and have quicker action times when in dangerous situations. However, there are many disadvantages of driverless cars. Computers would have difficulties making ethical（道德的）decisions: if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or change the direction suddenly and potentially kill the car’s passengers? Moreover, I personally find driving fun —I’d miss driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made —should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?

Although being driven around by a machine would perhaps mean that no one needs a driving license, and saving money for everyone, many people would be put out of a job when driverless cars appear. Bus, taxi and train drivers as well as driving instructors would be made unnecessary. I’m not certain if I’d want a driverless car —but it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and common on our roads.
