One day, a little boy comes into a shop and says to the shop assistant (店员), “I want to buy five exercise books of 2 yuan each (每一个) and 3 pencils of 1 yuan each. How much are they?”

The shop assistant thinks for a minute. Then she says, “13 yuan.” “If (如果) I give you twenty yuan, how much money will I get back?” “You will get seven for change. Here you are. These are the things you want.”

“No, thank you. I don’t want to buy anything,” the boy says politely. “This is my math homework. Thank you very much.”

How do you celebrate the New Year? I celebrated the New Year 1． (two) in a year, one in the United States and the other in China.

On December 31, our city had a celebration to welcome the New Year.Just before midnight, everyone went to the park.Then came my favorite part, the thing I like 2． (much), Pop! Pop! Pop! Fireworks (烟花) like a shower of colorful lights sprinkled (撒) down from the sky.

Then my family took a plane to China 3． (celebrate) Chinese New Year with Grandma. This celebration is different 4． that in the United States. It lasts for fifteen days, not just one night. At Alexandria Country Day School in Virginia, a group of sixth-graders had a special project (项目). They used 3D printers to create(创造) mini 3D-printed model villages for people without places to live in. The students got the idea from a company (公司) called Icon. With 3D printers, Icon makes cheap homes for everyone. And building these homes just takes a few days.

Allison McDonald is the science teacher and the director (负责人) of the sixth-grade project. She said, “Through the project, the students not only learned about the high technology (技术) and teamwork, but they also learned to know the true needs of homeless people.” While creating their mini 3D buildings, the students studied how to better use the technology in everyday life. They said getting everything ready before printing was hard. Putting a lot of ideas into their neighborhood, they made houses, stores, and schools. Also, they made churches, health centers, theaters and even bus stops to make people get a sense of belonging (归属感).

Amber Fogarty is the director of Mobile Loaves & Fishes and gives homes for people in need for free. After learning about the students’ project,   Amber said, “Both the project and the students are excellent! How can you use your brains and hearts to solve problems? I don’t know what the future will be like with 3D printing. But everything is possible. It is a journey of discovery.”

Bolognese Sauce (意式肉酱)

What you need:

1 spoon of olive oil (油)

1 small carrot, cut into small pieces

1 small onion, cut into small pieces

400 g tomatoes

some fresh basil leaves (紫苏叶)

250 g minced beef

How to make it:

First, heat the oil in a frying pan (煎锅). Put in the carrot and onion and cook for 5 minutes.

Then, add the minced beef to the carrot and onion.Cook for a few minutes (until the meat is brown).

Next, put the tomatoes into the frying pan, and cook for another 5 minutes. Stir all the time.

After that, add the basil leaves, then cook slowly for 15 minutes.

At last, put some basil leaves on top of the sauce and enjoy it with noodles.

Boys and girls, welcome to our school restaurant. Food and drinks in the restaurant are cheap and delicious. For breakfast, you can eat eggs, noodles and drink milk. For lunch and dinner, you can have rice, different kinds of meat and vegetables. And you can have some apples and lots of drinks. Come and have a meal, please. It’s a good place to enjoy yourselves.
