The Chongyang Festival is a traditional Chinese festival. It is celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar (阴历) month. It’s also called the Double Ninth Festival.
The festival started as early as the Warring States Period (475-221 BC). 4. It has a history of more than 1,700 years. Among the numbers from zero to nine, nine is the highest odd number (基数). People believe that two “ninths” meeting together stand for a long life. 5. 所以对中国人来说它是一个表达爱的特别的节日。They hold many kinds of activities in honor of old people to wish them good health and a long life.
The festival comes during the golden time of the fall. On the day, people traditionally drink chrysanthemum (菊花) wine, eat Double-Ninth Cakes and climb mountains. They also carry a kind of plant, and its name is dogwood (茱萸). People in ancient times believed that the plant could drive away evil (邪恶的) spirits and prevent them from catching an illness in winter.

“I was amazed when I first watched the Shadow Play (皮影戏) in Xi’an. It’s so special that it makes me want to know more,” said Sally from Armenia. She shares her Shadow Play works online, and she already has fans from different countries.
It has been three years since Sally came to China. Sally first watched the Shadow Play at a theater in Xi’an. “I fell in love with this art the first time I saw it.” Sally said.
“I love interesting Chinese folklore (民间传说) and fairy tales. For a long time, I tried to find ways to interpret stories and share them with others. That’s when I happened to learn about Shadow Play,” she said.
Sally has been watching many videos and live shows to learn more about it. She said, “With a large box, a large piece of white paper and a lamp, my first Shadow Play stage was built.” Even today, she still finds that experience pretty enjoyable. While making the Shadow Play, Sally always studies traditional Chinese culture and learns the meaning of each cultural symbol.
After sharing her works online, Sally soon got many fans across countries. Earlier this year, an Armenian television company broadcast (播出) her Shadow Play show on TV. The local people started to feel the beauty of Shadow Play from Sally’s works.
“Recently, I have been working on a shadow puppet (木偶) show about Chinese poetry. In the future, I want to share Armenia’s fairy tales with Chinese friends through Shadow Play. I will continue to make Shadow Play, learn more knowledge, and use it to set up a special ‘stage’ for cultural exchange.” Sally said.

Different countries have different customs. When you are in different countries, you should follow the customs there. In China, you are not supposed to start eating first if there are older people at the table.
Very often people who travel to the United States forget to tip (给小费). It is usual to tip waiters, taxi drivers and porters who help carry your bags at a train station, an airport or in a hotel. Waiters expect to get a fifteen percent tip on the cost of your meal. Taxi drivers expect about the same amount.
In England, you can see people standing in line almost everywhere, at the bus stop, in a bank, in the post office, in the doctor’s waiting room and so on. So when you are in the UK, make sure to wait in a queue even if there are only two of you. It’s a good idea to talk about the weather there. It’s a favorite subject of conversations with the British.
In Spain, it’s a good idea to have a light meal in the afternoon if someone invites you for dinner. People have dinner very late, and restaurants do not usually open until 9:00 p. m.
In Saudi Arabia, men kiss one another on the cheek (脸颊). Your host may welcome you with a kiss on both cheeks. It is polite for you to do the same.
In Japan, people usually give personal or business cards to each other when they meet for the first time. When a person gives you a card, don’t put it into your pocket soon. The person expects you to read it before you put it away.
Don’t forget to be careful of your body language when you express something in conversations. A kind of body language that is acceptable in one culture may be impolite in another.

Dong Yuhui was a teacher at New Oriental, an English-language training organization. On June 9th 2022, he became a big hit online by selling agricultural (农业的) products through live-streaming (直播). Agricultural products, like fruits and beef, are from plants or animals.
Unlike other live-streamers, Dong talked about what he would usually talk about in a classroom, both in Chinese as well as in English, before coming to the point. But his viewers just loved it.
“It’s very good,” someone said. “I feel like being in a classroom.” That very evening, sales from his live-streaming reached 15 million yuan ($2.23 million), while his video was put on the daily hot list on popular short-video platform Douyin.
New Oriental is finally seeing hope after a year of struggle. It faced its biggest challenge after the Ministry of Education introduced a national policy banning (禁止) after-school training.
New Oriental finally found a way to overcome its difficulty: Selling agricultural products through live-streaming.
Its struggle should serve as an inspiration for other organizations that have been badly hit because of the new policy. In fact, several video-sharing apps are already planning to attract live-streamers for agricultural sales. By October 2021, at least one app had got 126,000 “new farmers” born after 1995, who could clearly tell their viewers how they were growing fruits and vegetables and attracting more people to buy their products.
There are yoga and boxing teachers, as well as carpenters(木匠), who share their knowledge or skills online and make money. It’s a new way to express themselves better.
