In recent years, science fiction (科幻小说) has become more and more popular in China, especially after the sci-fi writer Liu Cixin won the Hugo Award in 2015.

What does a Senior Tree Officer do? I am responsible for taking care of over 3,000 trees across 36 places. I also make sure the trees are healthy and strong. |
Have you always loved trees and the outdoors? My dad has always had a love of nature. He loves watching birds, so from a young age I had a very outdoorsy childhood. |
Do you ever feel scared of heights? Tree climbing and outdoor activities were always a part of my childhood, but as you grow up, you lose that fearlessness (无畏). There are some moments when you get to the top of a tree and you’re questioning a lot of things, but you have to calm down and don’t overthink things. |
What do you like about trees? Their beauty. Every tree can tell a story. |
Do you have a favourite tree fact? How shallow (浅的) tree roots are! A lot of people think they go down deep, but they’re actually shallow, only in the top metre of earth and wide spreading (延展). |
What is your favourite type of tree? One of my favourites is a paperbark maple. I’ve got one in my garden that I planted a few years ago. It’s got this lovely rich dark brown bark. |

Actually Barbara, a German designer who is running a children’s wear brand in Shenyang, is full of praise for Chinese food, especially Yuanxiao (元宵). “We always prepare some handmade lanterns (灯笼) to celebrate the Lantern Festival, ” she added, “This year for Chinese New Year I gave out some special Hongbao, but the most important thing is the money inside.”
Zhang Luka from Italy is a big fan of Chinese culture. He told us what his first experience with the Spring Festival was like. “At that time, I saw everyone leaving, taking big bags and going back home. All of a sudden, all the restaurants were closed and take-out food was pretty difficult to order as well. What an unbelievable story! Luckily, after the first year, I got to meet many Chinese friends and enjoyed the holidays in a Chinese way. This was the opportunity for me to really get close to Chinese culture.”
