Surprise! I believe you didn’t expect a note from your mom in your lunchbox! How is your school day so far? I hope it is going well. You always do your best. I am proud of you!
Because I had to leave so early this morning, I wrote this note last night and put it into your lunchbox to wish you well on your speech today. With all of your amazing research, writing, and practice, you are going to do great!
I know that you get a little nervous talking in front of large groups—everybody does. But, just remember what you practiced and you just might forget about being nervous.
Here are just a few things to remember when you are giving a speech:
●Make eye contact (眼神交流) with your classmates.
●Speak clearly and slowly.
●Look at your notecards only when you have to.
●Enjoy yourself! Once you are in front of the class, pretend (假装) that you are a famous expert on your theme and everyone is listening carefully to your EVERY word.
Well, that’s all for now. I am thinking of you today and I know you will do great. Do your best and be brave like George Washington. He was an excellent example for your speech.
Good luck Erik! Maybe we can go out for ice cream afterschool!
Love,
Mom

Helping Seniors(老年人) Matt I created Teens Helping Seniors with my friends. The group has about 200 volunteers. The volunteers give food to the elderly in town. We spend six to eight hours a week doing this thing. LindaI organized Miler Senior Technology, a program to help the elderly learn how to use computers and smartphones. Now there are 50 local seniors in the weekly technology classes. I want to make sure that the seniors could stay connected to the world. JordanI came up with a way to help lonely seniors with my friends. We call it Joy 4 All Project. When the elderly call 569-4255, they can hear pre-recorded jokes. The hotline has received more than 1, 800 phone calls. KathyI heard that the seniors in the old people’s home couldn’t see their families and friends very often, so my friends and I decided to cheer up the elderly by writing them letters or visiting them. When visiting them, we often talk with them or sing for them. By now more than 100 students in my school have joined us. We now have our own name called We Are Together. |

Yang Jun’ao, a 16-year-old student from No. 1 Middle School in Nanxian County, Hunan Province, invented a “lotus root harvesting robot (采藕机器人)”.
“I got the idea when I saw my grandmother, in her 70s, working hard to harvest lotus roots under the hot sun,” Yang said. Sometimes, his grandmother would badly hurt her fingers using her harvesting tools.
To make things easier for his grandmother, Yang thought of creating a machine that could automatically (自动地) harvest lotus roots. With help from his teacher Hong Wei. Yang spent nearly a year building a model of the machine. The robot moves on its own through the muddy field. It uses image recognition (识别) to find roots that are ripe (成熟的) by looking at the color of the lotus leaves. The robot’s arm then cuts the lotus roots without hurting them.
During the invention process, Yang faced challenges like collecting parts for the model, putting them together and using a hot glue gun for bonding. “The first time I used a hot glue gun, my hands were shaking,” Yang laughed. At first, he planned to use rotating blades (旋转叶片) for harvesting lotus roots, but it was hard to find them, so he used more common blades instead.
When Yang showed the machine to his grandmother, she was happy and gave helpful suggestions for improvement. She suggested using the audio player to show the machine’s location in dense (稠密的) lotus leaves. “My grandmother’s advice reminded me that any technological invention must be practical to have true value,” said Yang.
Although Yang still needs to make improvement, like finding cheaper ways to make the machines, his teacher Hong praised Yang’s creative thinking and dedication (致力) to helping his hometown.
