Kate had a big and old apple tree in her backyard. The tree was ______ with fruit. “My, those apples look good,” she said. “They should be ripe (成熟) in a few days.” Kate loved apples. She planned to make apple pies. “I think I’ll make apple jelly, too.” she said.

The next morning. Kate picked the ripe apples. She ______ a few apples for the fox. “I think we can share the apples.” She said with a smile.

Aaaaaahhhhh! It is that time of year again—time to plant flowers. Christina and her dad are trying to decide what kind of flowers to plant this year. Her dad shows her an ad in the morning paper. He wants Christina to help him decide what they should buy. They always like to amaze Christina’s mom with beautiful flowers before her “big day” in May. Christina is glad to see Flower Power is having a sale. She knows they had better hurry to the store.

Haley was so disappointed. She just couldn’t believe it! She should have her birthday party tomorrow, but now the city will get hit by a hurricane (飓风). The party stopped and had to be put off. This terrible storm was now quickly heading towards the south of the United States—somewhere near Miami where Haley lived. The storm had winds of up to 120 miles per hour.

Haley knew it could be very harmful. Her city experienced a number of hurricanes. So instead of preparing for her party. Haley was busy helping her mom make a full preparation (准备) for the coming hurricane. They needed new flashlights and radios, fresh water and any other food and drinks. They also had lots of medicine, warm clothes, and baby food for her brother. Haley’s mom asked Haley to remind her to get some money while she was at the store. While Haley and her mom were busy at the store, Haley’s dad was busy checking their boat. When be finished, he was going to return to the house and use wood to stop the wind going into their windows.

Because Haley’s grandparents live in Atlanta, Haley and her family will leave Miami and stay with them for a few days. Haley hopes they will all be able to return soon. She is also excited that she will get to visit her grandparents. After all, getting together with her family is a happy thing!

Do you often feel it’s hard to move when you wake up? If so, you may be afraid. You may think something terrible happened to you. As a matter of fact, many people have this experience, too. It is called sleep paralysis. Although it sounds scary, it is normal.

Sleep paralysis happens when a person is falling asleep or waking up. As the person falls asleep, his or her body slowly relaxes. Usually the person’s mind relaxes at the same time, but sometimes the mind stays awake longer than the body. As a result, the person can be conscious (清醒的), but it’s difficult to move or speak. Sleep paralysis can also happen when you wake up. Luckily, it seldom lasts for more than a few seconds. Actions and words soon return to normal.

Some people say they may hear, see, or feel things that don’t exist (存在) during sleep paralysis. At one time, people thought that ghosts came in the room and were holding them down and stopping them from moving. Science helps us understand that such visions (幻觉) are actually part of sleep paralysis. Now we know that getting too little sleep, taking some medicine and changing your sleep time can cause sleep paralysis. This condition can be scary if it happens to you, but it’s just a trick that your mind is playing on your body.

The world is full of creatures (生物), such as animals, plants and so on. But the smallest living creatures on the earth are bacteria. Actually, you can’t see them without a microscope. Bacteria may be small, but there are a lot of them around us!

Bacteria live on the earth for a long time. These bacteria can live everywhere. We can find bacteria in cold places, such as in deep Arctic ice and in hot places, such as the insides of bot spring.

We may only think bacteria can make us sick, but bacteria do many things to help life on earth live and grow. They help break down dead plants and animals into soil nutrients (土营养物).Without these nutrients, soil could not be used to grow food for humans and animals. Without bacteria, ecosystems would be less healthy because dead plants and animals would not break down properly.

▲ For example, they affect (影响) the taste of some types of bread. And without bacteria, we would not have cheese or yogurt.

The human body needs some bacteria to work properly. Microscopic bacteria help our stomachs work. Also, bacteria help clear dead skin cells. And some kinds of bacteria even fight off other harmful bacteria. Now, scientists use bacteria to make medicine to fight against illnesses. Bacteria just might be the most useful organisms on the earth!
