Firefighters in Chongqing, a city in Southwest China, have put out an outbreak of major wildfires caused by extreme heatwaves in only nine days. They dealt with this by lighting a fire and linking it with the burning forest fire in
The whole process took 3 hours and around midnight, the
As we walked down the shore, Ben Gunn told his story. “I was alone here for years,” he said. “One day, I found the skeleton(骷髅). I saw it was pointing to a tree. I dug around that tree and found the treasure. I was living in a cave, so I took the treasure to the cave. This morning, when Long John Silver and his men came to look for the treasure, I showed myself to one of them. He thought I was a ghost.” Ben laughed. “He ran off, and this gave me time to get back to the square(乡绅) and the doctor. They were waiting at the cave.”
“Now I know,” I said to the doctor, “why you gave the map to Silver.”
“It was useless by then,” the doctor said. “There was no buried treasure. Ben Gunn had it. My plan was to get Long John Silver and his men away from the stockade(木寨). We could then get some stores from it.”
When we got back to the cave, the squire was waiting for us.
“Three of the mutineers(反叛者) got away,” the doctor told him. “But if we hurry, we can get to the boat before them. They ran back to the stockade on the other side of the island. We are nearer to the boat than they are.”
I went into the cava. The captain was lying inside it next to the treasure—a pile of gold coins.
“Hello, Jim,” he said. “I am pleased to see you. But I don’t think you or I will be going to see again.”
That night, the captain died. We carried the treasure down to the boat. We lit a fire on the shore and had a fine meal together. We were not afraid of the three mutineers. We had pistols(手枪). They had none. There were more of us than of them.
The next morning, we went in the boat towards the Hispaniola. We didn’t care about the three men. We left them on the island.
I will not tell you about the journey home. Nothing important happened. But as soon as we got to Bristol, Long John Silver ran away. He took some of the gold with him. None of us cared. We were pleased to see the back of him. We each shared the treasure and used it in a different way.

Two fish lived in a pond. Their names were Satabuddhi (having the understanding of a hundred) and Sahasrabuddhi (having the understanding of a thousand). The two of them had a frog for a friend, whose name was Ekabuddhi (having the understanding of one).
One day when they were enjoying a conversation on the bank, some fishermen came by just as the sun was setting. They said to one another, “There seem to be a lot of fish in this pond, and the water is very low. Let us come back here tomorrow morning!” These words struck the three friends like a thunderbolt.
The frog said, “Oh, what shall we do? Should we flee (逃跑) or stay here?” Hearing this, Sahasrabuddhi laughed and said. “Don’t be afraid of words alone! They probably will not come back. But even if they do come back, I will be able to protect myself and you as well through the power of my understanding, for I know many pathways through the water.
After hearing this, Satabuddhi said, “Yes, what Sahasrabuddhi says is correct, for one rightly says: Clever minds have many pathways. Why should one abandon the birthplaces of our forefathers because of empty words?”
The frog said, “I have but one wit (智慧), and it is advising me to flee.” After saying this, the frog went to another pond.
Early the next day the fishermen came and spread their nets over the pond. Satabuddhi and Sahasrabuddhi were caught. The frog Ekabuddhi said to his wife, “Look! Most of us have spent time at a museum, looking at and learning about the things there. But how many of us have ever thought about how these objects are kept in good condition?
Every year, museums put a lot of money and effort into keeping their objects in good condition. They make sure the temperature and light levels are always just right, and that the air isn’t too wet.
However, even if the conditions are correct, some things still can ruin a valuable object — insects. Often they enter the museum inside the object itself. They may also be brought in by accident on visitors’ clothes. Once inside the museum, they can quickly move from one object to another, and they enjoy eating natural materials such as wood, cotton, silk and wool.
Museum experts say that the older the objects are, the more the insects seem to be attracted (吸引) to them. That’s a problem because these things can’t easily be repaired. As a result, museums will try almost anything to prevent insects from harming their collections. For example, a new object will be kept separately at first. Then, when staff are sure there are no insects inside, it can be put on show. If insects are found in a piece of clothing or art, placing it in a freezer is one way of getting rid of (除掉) them.
But now one museum in the USA has decided to try something new. They are training a dog to find insects. Dogs have an excellent sense of smell. Usually the dog sits down to show that it has found what it’s looking for. Staff at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston hope that their dog, Riley, will learn to do this when it finds insects. They say that at the moment it’s just an experiment (实验). However, if Riley can help find insects before they do a lot of harm, other museums are sure to be interested.

Everybody has his or her dream job. I also have my dream job. My dream is to work for foreign tourists as a tour guide.
Why do I want to be a tour guide? First, I’m an outgoing girl, and I like doing something exciting. Maybe being a tour guide is the best choice. If I become a tour guide, I can travel all around China and know more about our country. Then I will tell the foreign tourists about our colorful history. Second, I like making friends. And I am able to make lots of friends. If I work as a tour guide, I can make more friends all over the world. That may be great. Perhaps someday my foreign friends will ask me to visit their countries. I really like to go to their countries to know something about their culture. The trip will be excellent. Third, I like singing. Singing English songs is my favorite. I believe I will be popular with foreign tourists.
Now, I am still a middle school student. My job now is to work hard in school. Then I’ll go to university to learn something about being a tour guide. I'm sure I can be a qualified (有资格的) tour guide when I grow up.
