My uncle lives in a village. But he works in the big city. He goes to work by train every morning and comes home in the same way. This morning when he is reading his newspaper on the train, a man behind him says “hello” to him and begins to talk to him. “Your life isn’t interesting, is it? You take the same train every morning, and you always sit in the same seat and read the same newspaper.”

There are some holidays in some Western countries.

April Fool’s Day is on April 1. People usually play tricks(开玩笑) on others on that day. It’s very popular(受欢迎的) in the U.K. and the U.S.

Mother’s Day is on the second Sunday in May. It’s a holiday to thank mothers. On that day, mothers usually get flowers and cards from their family. Fathers and children will do the housework, so mothers can have a good rest(休息).

Thanksgiving Day is on the fourth Thursday in November for Americans. On that day, family get together and have a big dinner.

Christmas Day comes on December 25. It’s a popular holiday for many Western countries. People don’t go to work and children don’t go to school. Children will get gifts from their parents at Christmas.

One day, long long ago, a little baby was born (出生). His name was Jesus (耶稣). Jesus was a special baby. Many people said he was the son of God (上帝). When he was born, a new star was in the sky. Three wise men saw the star. They followed the star to Jesus. They brought the baby special gifts. When the baby grew into a man, he was a great teacher. He taught people to love God and to love each other. Jesus’s birthday, December 25th, is Christmas Day. We give gifts to our friends and family at Christmas. We put stars on our Christmas trees, too.

A Delicious Bird

A rich (富有的) man wants to give his mother a birthday gift, but what will be the best one? One day he finds an amazing bird in the market. It can talk in twelve languages (语言) and sing ten famous opears (歌剧). He buys the bird quickly and sends it to his mother. It costs him $50,000.

The next day he phones to his mother, “What do you think of the bird. Mother?”

“Oh, it’s very delicious,” his mother answers.

Christmas is December twenty-fifth. At Christmas, people don’t work and children don’t go to school. They have a two-week holiday. They give Christmas cards to their friends. Parents often pretend to be Santa and give gifts to their children. They tell stories about Christmas. Some people go on trips. They go to a warm place to enjoy (享受) the sun and the beach. All of them have a good time.

Jenny is from Canada. She wakes up at 7:00 in the morning. She washes her face and hands. She eats breakfast at 7:15. She brushes her teeth and combs her hair after breakfast. Then she puts on her clothes. She goes to school by bus. She works hard at school. Jenny goes to school from Monday to Friday. Saturday and Sunday are different. Jenny doesn’t go to school on those days.

It was in autumn. A young man came to a forest. He walked beside the forest. On his right was a river. On his left was the forest. Suddenly he saw two green eyes looking at him from the trees. A tiger was getting ready to jump on him.

What did he do? He jumped into the river. In the river there was a big crocodile(鳄鱼). Its mouth was so big. The young man closed his eyes. The tiger jumped over him. And the young man opened his eyes. The tiger was in the mouth of the crocodile at that time.

Winter is a beautiful season. My favourite season is winter. It’s often snowy and cold. In winter, the days are shorter. And the nights are longer. But I like snow, so I often go skiing (滑雪) on Sundays with my family. When it snows, everything turns white. There is thick (厚的) snow on roads, streets, trees and houses. It’s a beautiful world! My friends and I like making snowmen. It’s very interesting and exciting.

On Christmas Eve (平安夜), Simon often has a party with his family in his house. They buy a Christmas tree and put it up with flowers, toys, lights and cards. After they finish, it looks very beautiful. Then they have a big Christmas dinner. There is turkey (火鸡肉), hot drinks and much other Christmas food on the table. After dinner, they sit under the Christmas tree and sing songs happily. They all have a good time.

Benny the Bat

Benny is a bat. He has wings and small eyes. He cannot see well, but he can hear very well. This helps him catch(抓住) his food at night. He likes to eat bugs(臭虫) such as moths(蛾), mosquitoes(蚊子). He catches them at night! During the day, he is busy sleeping. He likes dark, dry and warm places. He likes to sleep in big trees or old barns(谷仓). He is upside down when he sleeps. Benny is a fast flier. He flies everywhere. He is not a bird. He is a mammal(哺乳动物). He looks like a mouse with wings. Benny is a bat!
