Like a Gentleman (绅士)

Jack is seven years old. He likes eating cakes very much. Jack has a five-year-old sister. Her name is Mary.

One day, Jack's mother gives him a nice cake, a knife and says to him, “Now here's a knife, Jack. Cut this cake in half, and give one of the piece to your sister, but remember (记住) you are a student now, and you should do it like a gentleman.” “Like a gentleman?” Jack asks, “How does a gentleman do it?”

“They always give the big one to other people.” answers his mother.

“Oh, I see,” says Jack. He thinks for a second (秒). Then he gives the cake and the knife to his sister and says to her, “Mary, cut this cake in half. Remember: do it like a gentleman.”

A Picnic

Today is Sunday. It's a sunny day. Sarah and Amy are out for a picnic. They go to a park. It's a big park. They can see many people there. There are many green trees in the park. Near the gate, there is a lake. Some ducks are swimming in the lake and you can see lots of fishes there.

Sarah and Amy bring many things to eat, such as bread, cake, sausages (香肠), hot dogs and hamburgers. They have a picnic under a tree. After picnic they read some books and talk with each other. They have a good time.

This is Lucy and that is Lily. Lucy looks like Lily and Lily looks like Lucy, too. They look the same. They are American. They are new students in Jim’s class. They are in Grade One. Jim looks after them. They are new friends. They go to a shop. They would like something to eat and drink. Lucy would like some bread. Lily would like a bottle of orange. Jim would like some apples.

People are busy working every day. They do not have enough time to do exercise. So many people become too fat or too thin. We need to do exercise to keep fit.

There are many kinds of exercise. Bending and stretching helps us move easily. Before we play ball games or swim, we shall do bending and stretching exercise first. This kind of exercise is sometimes called warm-up exercise. Running is also good exercise. If we cannot run fast, we can jog. Jogging means running slowly. Again, before we run or jog, we must do some warm-up exercise. Also, we should not run or jog in busy streets. It is not safe and the air there is often dirty.

There is an old man and many mice in a house. The old man has a cat. Every day the cat catches the mice and eats them.

One day the old mouse says, “All mice must come to my room this evening. We must find a way to deal with the cat.”

All the mice come. Many mice speak, but they don’t know what to do. At last, a young mouse stands up and says, “We must put a bell (铃铛) on the cat. When the cat comes near, we can hear the bell ring (铃响) and run away. So the cat can’t catch us.”

“Who can put the bell on the cat?” asks the old mouse. But no one answers.
