Hi! I’m Mary. Today is my birthday. I’m ten now. Look! There is a big cake on the table. There are some sweets, biscuits(饼), peanuts （花生）and fruit on it, too. My mother makes the big cake for me. Helen and Dick are here. Helen gives me a book. It’s about animals. Dick gives me a kite. It’s very beautiful. We are going to（将要）eat the nice food. I am very happy.

Christmas is an important festival in Western countries. Children are very excited at the festival. Because they can receive（收到）many gifts（礼物）. On Christmas Eve, small children always put stockings（长筒袜）at the end of their bed. They think Father Christmas will give gifts in the stockings. Children usually wake up（醒来）early on Christmas morning. Because they want to open the gifts early.

Children in America like Halloween very much.

On the 31st of October, they put on special clothes in the evening. Sometimes they dress like witches (女巫) and ghosts (幽灵). Sometimes they dress like kings and queens. They go to their neighbours’ houses and knock at the doors. The neighbours open the door. The children say, “Trick or treat?” And the neighbours give them some sweets.

Sometimes people don’t give the children any food. Then they play a trick on them. They may put soap (肥皂) on their windows.

Children like this special festival. They like their bags of sweets.

Mother’s Day is on the second Sunday in May. It is a special festival for mothers.

Some mothers get carnations(康乃馨) or cards on Mother’s Day. Some families go out for lunch or dinner on Mother’s Day.

April Fool’s Day

Do you want to be a fool? Of course not. But sometimes you may be a fool. That’s on the first of April . Do you know April Fool’ s Day?

April 1st is called April Fool’s Day. We can also call it “All Fool’s Day”. It comes from France. It has a history of 800 years. On that day people can tell a lie (说谎), cheat (欺骗) others, cook up a story and spread (传播) it around. They can make fun of others. If you are cheated by others, you would be called fools. But in England, people can only do these in the morning, and they can’t make fun of high officials (高级官员).

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a special day in early autumn. On the evening of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the moon is always full (完整的). Some people believe that it is more beautiful, too! There are many stories about the moon and the Mid-Autumn Festival. One of the stories is about Chang-Er, a woman who flew to the moon.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival, people like to go outdoors with their families to watch the moon. Chinese families eat moon cakes and pomelos (柚子) on this day. Many moon cakes are round like the moon and are the special food of this festival. A pomelo is a large fruit. After eating the pomelos, some parents make pomelo hats for their children. It’s fun!

Easter is a traditional（传统的）festival in Western countries. On that day, children always wear different hats. There are toy chicks and flowers on them. They are cute and interesting.

Children always get chocolate eggs. Some chocolate eggs are big, and some are small. Sometimes there are small eggs in the big eggs. Some are sweets, and some are not.
