Once upon a time, a wolf was lapping the water(舔水) at a spring(泉水) on a hillside. When he looked up, he saw a lamb drinking a little lower down. “There’s my supper,” he thought . “I will find some excuses to catch him.”Then he called out to the lamb, “How dare you smear(弄脏) the water I am drinking?”

“No,” said the lamb. “I cannot smear your water because the water runs down from you to me.”

“Well, then,” said the wolf. “Why did you call me bad names last year?”

“That couldn’t be,” said the lamb. “I was only six months old then.”

“I don’t care,” shouted the wolf. “If it was not you, it must be your father.” After that he rushed at the poor little lamb and ate it up.

There was once a shoemaker. He was poor. He had nothing but just enough leather to make one pair of shoes. That night he put the leather on the worktable and went to sleep. The next morning, the shoemaker was very surprised to see a pair of shoes. Soon after, a customer came, and bought the shoes at a very high price. Then the shoemaker had enough money to buy leather to make more shoes. He cut out the leather at night, and wanted to make shoes the next morning . When he got up, the shoes were already finished. This went on for some time. The shoemaker quickly became rich. Whenever the old man saw his neighbours or the poor people in need, he would help them. One night not long before Christmas, the shoemaker and his wife decided to stay awake to see who helped them. At midnight, they saw some naked elves start to make shoes. And when the sun rose, they quickly hid themselves. The shoemaker and his wife wanted to show their thanks. They made the elves some clothes. The elves were very happy.

City Mouse and Country Mouse(城市老鼠和乡村老鼠)

One day, a city mouse met a country mouse in the field(田野). The country mouse was eating nuts(坚果). The nuts were not good food for the city mouse. He said to the country mouse, “Come with me. You can find the good food easily in the city.”

Long long ago, in England, there lived an earl(伯爵). His name was Sandwich. He liked to play cards very much. He played cards with his friends from day to night. He ordered his servants (仆人) to bring him some meat and bread. But when he ate, he had to stop playing cards. One day, he had a good idea. He put the meat between the two pieces of bread and held the food in his left hand. And he played cards with his right hand. People liked Sandwich's idea, more people ate the food. And they named the food sandwich.

   It was a fine day. A little donkey（驴） went out to play. As he was playing happily near a river, a hungry wolf （狼）ran to him. The little donkey wasn’t afraid at all.“Good afternoon, Mr. Wolf.”said the donkey.“Now you can’t eat me yet.”“Why?”shouted the wolf.“I have just got a thorn（刺） in one of my hoofs（蹄）.When you eat me, the thorn may prick your mouth. Would you like to help me pull it out first?”“How foolish you are!”the wolf thought.“I want to eat you, but you are worrying that the thorn may prick me.”So he answered with a smile, “Of course. If you let me eat you, I’d like to do everything for you.”Then he lowered his head close to the hoof. The little donkey kicked the wolf with all his strength (力量)suddenly and then ran away quickly.
