December 25th is Christmas Day. In most Western countries, it is the most important day in the year. All the people come back to their homes. On Christmas Day, bells ring everywhere. The ringing bells tell people Christmas is coming. People sing and dance day and night. They have a good time.

Most families buy a Christmas tree for their children. And there are some presents in the tree here and there. People also put presents in children's stockings. In many places, Father Christmas brings presents to them. He is a kind man and in red clothes. There is a big bag on his back. In it, there are a lot of presents.

On Christmas Day, people enjoy a lot of nice food. But some poor people have no houses to live, and have no food to eat. They die of cold and hunger on Christmas Day.

Tom is seven. He goes to school every day. The school is near his home. So he goes there on foot and comes back home on time (准时). But today he is late. His mother asks him, “Why are you late today?” “I was in the teachers’ office.’’ “Why did you go to the teachers’ office?” “Because my teacher asked us a question in class, and nobody (没有人) could answer it, but me.” “It’s good to answer the teacher’s questions.” “But the question was ‘Who put the ink (墨水)on my chair?’”

Once a monkey thinks he has many friends and he thinks everyone (大家) likes him and is his friend and he is very proud.

One day, the monkey sees a man coming after (追赶) him. The man is a hunter from the circus (马戏团的猎人). The monkey hopes his friends can help him to run away from (赶走) this circus hunter.

He goes to the horse, but the horse says he is very busy and he thinks the monkey’s other friends can help him.   He goes to the giraffe, but the giraffe says he has to go home to look after his children. The monkey asks all of the other friends to help him, but nobody (没有人) does. He finally is caught by (被) the hunter. He cries and says to himself (对自己说), “I think I have many friends. I guess (猜) I don’t have any true (真) friends.”

A fisherman (渔民) is good at playing the flute (吹长笛) and he plays very well. His friends and his neighbours often get together to listen to his music. Then the fisherman thinks, “If (假如) I play the flute for fish, they will come to me too.” The next day, he brings his flute to work. When he comes to the beach (河滩), he climbs on a high rock (高岩石) and starts to play the flute. He plays very well, but there isn’t any fish coming to him.”

The fisherman doesn’t give up (放弃), and he plays even harder (更努力), still, no fish comes to him. Finally he says angrily (生气), “Foolish fish (蠢鱼), you have no ear for music.” Then he takes out his net and starts to work, he catches a lot of fish. The net helps him to catch the fish, but the flute can’t.

The Great Barrier Reef

Coral(珊瑚) is a living thing. A coral reef grows under the sea. Coral looks like plants but it is made up of animals. The biggest coral reef in the world is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The Great Barrier Reef is still growing now.

The Greenland(格陵兰岛)

An island is a piece of land which has water all around it. Some islands are in the sea. Some islands are in lakes or rivers. Islands can be big or small. Greenland is the largest island in the world. It's very cold in Greenland. It snows every month of the year.

Last Saturday I went to cinema. I had a good seat. The film was very interesting. But I didn’t enjoy it. A young man and a young woman sat behind me. They talked loudly. I got very angry. I could not hear the film. I turned around. I looked at them angrily. But they didn’t see me. At last, I could not bear it. I said to them, “I can’t hear a word!” “It’s none of your business (不关你的事),” the young man said rudely, “this is a private conversation (私人谈话).”

The children will learn about Australia next week. They want to find out about this country before lessons.

America is the fourth largest country in the world. It is smaller than Russia, Canada and China. Washington D.C. is its capital. But it is a quiet city. New York is the biggest city in America and it's one of the biggest cities in the world. It is in the east of the US and at the mouth of the Hudson River. A large part of the city is on Manhattan Island, a big island in the river. New York has a larger population than Washington D.C. In New York we can see the famous statue, the Statue of Liberty.
