Paul is always late for school. It is eight ten in the morning. The students are having an English lesson in the classroom. Paul opens the door and comes in.

“Paul, why are you late for school every morning?” his teacher asks. “When do you leave home?”

“I leave home at seven forty-five.” Paul answers.

“Is your home far from our school?” his teacher asks.

“No, about ten minutes’ walk.”

“Then why are you late?”

“Every day on my way to school I see a sign. It says: School! Go Slowly!”

John is a happy boy and he likes to make jokes (开玩笑). His classmates (同学) like him because he often makes them laugh (惹他们笑) for a long time.

One Sunday, a new student comes to his class. The student says that his younger brother Tom never (从不) laughs. No one and nothing (没有人和事) can make Tom laugh. John doesn’t believe (不相信), so he asks the student to bring Tom to his home. John tells (给…讲) Tom many funny (滑稽) stories. Everyone laughs, but Tom doesn’t. Finally, John has to give up (放弃). At last (最后), the student tells (告诉) John, “Tom is deaf.”

Mr. Ford sees a sweater in a shop window. Because it is cheap (便宜), he decides to buy (决定买) it.

When he gets home he puts the sweater on. It fits him very well and he is very happy with it.

In the afternoon, he goes out to work in his garden. It soon begins to rain (开始下雨) and Mr. Ford has to run into the house. He runs quickly, but he still (还是) gets wet (淋湿). Then his sweater starts to shrink (开始收缩)! It gets smaller and smaller (变得越来越小). Soon it is so tight that he can’t breathe (太紧而不能呼吸).

Finally, with great difficulty (艰难地) and the help of his wife (妻子的帮助), he gets out the sweater.

Jeff is only four and he is Mrs Green’s son. He is very naughty. Every day, after lunch his mother takes him to his bedroom and lets him sleep for one or two hours. But Jeff never sleeps. He makes a lot of noise and runs in the room. Mrs Green is very angry.

It’s half past twelve now. Jeff’s mother puts Jeff on his bed and goes to do some washing in the kitchen, and then she hears a noise. So she goes to Jeff’s room. But Jeff isn’t in his room. His trousers are on the bed. Where is he? Mrs Green looks for him in the house. But she can’t find him. So she stands in the middle of the house and shouts angrily, “Are you running without (没有) your trousers?” “No, madam,” a man’s voice (声音) comes from outside the door. “I’m bringing your vegetables and I am wearing my trousers.”

Jenny is walking home with her friends after school. She is very hungry.

“I can’t wait to have my chicken rice,” says Jenny excitedly. Her mother has promised (承诺) to make her favourite dish for lunch. She is looking forward to eating it.

When she gets home, her mother is not in. There is only fish and vegetables on the table. She is very sad and disappointed. Then, she finds a bunch of grapes next to the fridge. Her mother washes the grapes and she begins to eat grapes.

“Yummy!” she exclaims (惊叫). She forgets about the lunch on the table. When she has finished every single of the grapes, she is too full to eat lunch. She stares guiltily (内疚地) at the food her mother has prepared for her.

Mike is six and starts to go to school this week. It’s Sunday. His mother, Mrs. Smith, doesn’t go to work. Mike hopes to go to the zoo. He gets up at six and asks his mother to take him to the zoo. After breakfast, they go to the bus stop. They are waiting for the bus at the bus stop. They want to take a No.3 bus.

“Look, Mum!” shouts the boy. “A No.3 bus is coming.”

“No, dear.” says Mrs. Smith. “It isn’t No.3 bus. It’s No.21 bus.”

“You are wrong,” says Mike. “My teacher says two and one is three!”

Tom and John are twin brothers. They live in the same room and are in the same class. One day they had a fight, so they don’t speak to each other for a few days. On Monday evening, Tom is very tired when he comes back from school. He goes to bed after dinner. He doesn’t say anything to John.

John helps his mother with the housework. Then he does his homework. When he goes to bed, he finds a piece of paper and a box on the small table near his bed. On it are the words, “John, wake me up at 7 a. m. —Tom.”

When Tom is awake the next morning, it is nearly 8 o’clock. And on the small table near his bed, he sees another piece of paper. He takes it and reads these words, “Tom, wake up! It is 7 a. m. —John.”

Tom and John are brothers. They live in the same room and they are in the same class.

One day they have a fight, so they don’t speak to each other for a few days. On Monday evening Tom is tired after dinner. He doesn't say anything to John.
