It was 11:50 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Li Hua’s grandfather and grandmather were at the flower fair. They wanted to buy some flowers before the new year. His parents and sister were in the living room, watching TV. They were talking and waiting for midnight to see the old year out and the new year in. But Li Hua wasn’t there. Where was he? Li Hua wasn’t out. He was in his bedroom, sleeping on his bed. Why? Because he ate too much at the New Year’s Eve dinner and had a stomachache.

The Lantern Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month, usually in February or early March. Chinese people began to celebrate this festival more than 2,000 years ago. Ancient Chinese people put up beautiful lanterns outside their houses. That’s how the festival gets its name.

Nowadays, on the night of the festival, people usually get together for dinner and then go outside to enjoy the first full moon of the lunar year. There are many lantern shows at this festival. Like the ancient people, people not only enjoy different kinds of lanterns, but also play lantern word guessing games on this day. Children usually play outside with their beautiful lanterns. People make and eat a special kind of dessert named “tang yuan”. They are round and sweet. People also call it “sweet dumpling”. The word “tang yuan” has the similar sound with “tuán yuán”, which means “reunion” in Chinese. The Lantern Festival is a very interesting festival. People in China all love it very much.

Some countries have special festivals. In Spain (西班牙) people have the Tomato Festival. On that day, about 20, 000 people get together. They wear old T-shirts and bring a lot of tomatoes. At 11:00 am., people begin to throw tomatoes at each other. They throw tomatoes at their friends and the people they don’t know. Some people even try to swim in the tomatoes. People usually use 100, 000 kg of tomatoes. Everyone gets wet and dirty but they are all happy. Some people say, “It’s great fun. But after the festival, we don’t want to eat tomatoes for a long time.”

The Spring Festival is the Chinese New Year. It is the most important festival in China. It usually comes in January or February. Before the Spring Festival, People often clean their houses, buy couplets (对联) and new clothes to make everything new and fresh.

Every year on New Year's Eve, watching the Spring Festival Gala with the whole family has become the first choice for most families. It is also a part of the “Spring Festival” for many people. Families sit around the TV and enjoy the festival together. People often have a big dinner that night. Instead of going to the restaurant for New Year's Eve dinner, some people choose to order online and get home service. People can have a warm New Year's Eve dinner at home. During the Spring Festival, people often go to visit their friends to wish them a happy Spring Festival. Children often get lucky money. As time goes on, more and more people use WeChat to greet each other.

As Chinese people live and work all over the world, the Spring Festival of China becomes a favourite festival of many countries and people in the world.

Favourite Festival

We made a survey in September in our school. We wanted to find out which Chinese festival is the most popular.

More than 1000 pupils voted (投票) for it. 450 pupils chose (选择) Chinese New Year as their favourite festival. They thought it was a cheerful and important festival as relatives and friends got together. Mid-Autumn Festival was the second and the Dragon Boat Festival stood at the third place.

Chinese New Year was the most popular festival. People loved their tradition (传统) festival and enjoyed celebrating them.

The Chongyang Festival is a traditional (传统的) festival in China. It is on the ninth of September in the Chinese lunar month, and it is known as the Double Ninth Festival.

People in China always climb the mountain during the Chongyang Festival. Why do they go mountain climbing at the Chongyang Festival? Because in ancient China. this activity means they miss their families and friends. They can give them the best wishes. They always enjoy the Chrysanthemum flowers (菊花). drink Chrysanthemum wine (菊花酒), and eat Chongyang cakes (重阳糕). Now the Chongyang Festival is also called the “Old Men Festival”. People often give the old people presents. They wish them a healthy life.

Christmas Day always comes on the 25th of December. It is the biggest festival in many countries. Children are very excited because they can get many presents from Father Christmas. Father Christmas is an old man in red clothes. When small children go to bed on the night of December 24th, they put a stocking at the end of their bed. Their parents ask them to sleep early, or Father Christmas will not give them anything. Children are very excited on Christmas morning and always wake up early, because they can see many presents in their stockings.

On Christmas Day, all the families will get together to have a big lunch or dinner, play party games and watch the Christmas programmers on TV.

The Spring Festival is the most important festival to the Chinese people. It’s traditional（传统的）festival in China. It’s in January or Feburary.

Before the Spring Festival, people often clean their houses, wash their clothes, paste the antithetical couplets（贴对联）and put on the lanterns（挂灯笼）. During the Spring Festival, people get togetherand have a big meal.We eat dumplings for the meal.The children are happy. The can play the fireworks（放烟花）and get the lucky money.

December 25th is Christmas Day. In most Western countries, it is the most important festival of the year. All the people come back to their home. On Christmas Day, bells ring everywhere . The ringing bell tells people Christmas is coming. People sing and dance day and night. They have a good time.

Most people buy a Christmas tree for their children. And there are some presents in the tree here and there. People also put presents in children’s stockings. In many places, Father Christmas brings presents to children. He is a kind man in red clothes. There is a big bag on his back. In it there are a lot of presents.

On Christmas Day, people always have a dinner with their family and friends. They often eat a Christmas turkey. And they sing lots of songs to show their happiess.
