The Smiths like to go out for a trip on Sundays. Today is Sunday. They want to go to the West Hill. Jack and Mike, their sons, get up very early in the morning. Jack puts on a T-shirt and jeans, and Mike puts on a shirt and jeans. They also put on their running shoes. After that they help their mother do the housework around the house. They put bread, meat, eggs and some fruit in a basket and carry it to the car. Mrs. Smith also takes four bottles of cola with her. The little dog is running after her. It wants to go with them, too. They are all very happy.

Every morning Mike goes to work by train. He always buys a newspaper because he has a long trip. It helps to make the time pass more quickly.

He likes reading the sports news. One Tuesday morning, he wants to read the report about an important football match. The report is very interesting so he forgets to get off the train. He gets off at the next station. Then he has to wait a long time for a train to go back. Of course, he gets to the office very late. His boss is very angry.

It’s December 24th today. It’s Mary and Betty’s birthday. They are American girls. They are twins. They’re in the same school and come home together.

There’s a birthday party in their home this evening. Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. White, are very busy. Twelve children are at the party. Mary and Betty have got a lot of birthday presents from their parents and friends. The presents are all lovely.

Now everything is ready. Mary begins to cut the birthday cake. The children sing “Happy birthday to you.” They’re having a good time.

It’s late at night. Alice is sitting on her bed and she’s looking at her clock. Her neighbors (邻居) are making a lot of noise, and she is very angry.

The people in Room 2 are dancing. The man in Room 3 is mopping the floor in his living room. The woman in Room4 is playing the violin. The teenagers (青少年) in Room 5 are listening to loud rock music. The dog in Room 6 is barking. And the people in Room 7 are having a big argument.

It’s very late and Alice is tired and angry. What a terrible night!

A visit to the doctor

Dave is a clerk of a company. He has trouble getting to sleep at night. He goes to see his doctor. And the doctor gives him some extra—strong sleeping pills （安眠药）. On Tuesday night Dave takes the pills, sleeps well and awake before he hears the alarm clock. He gets to the office on time, walks in and says to his boss, "I’m OK. I have no trouble getting up this morning." "That’s fine." the boss roars, "but where were you on Wednesday and Thursday?"

An old man visits a new doctor. He is very young. "I don’t fed well, doctor." he said. "Please find out what’s wrong with me." "Take off your clothes and lay down on the bed." The old man takes off his clothes and lies down on the bed. The young doctor examines him. However, he can’t find anything wrong with the old man. He listens to his heart. He looks into his throat. He examined every part of him. At last, he says, "I’m sorry, but I can’t find anything wrong with you." "That’s strange." the old man says, "I feel really bad."

"Go home and come to see me again tomorrow, if you don’t feel better." the doctor says, "I’ll examine you again." "All right, doctor." the old man says slowly. He stands up and puts on his clothes. Then he walks out of the hospital. A few seconds later, the nurse runs in. "Doctor, doctor!" she cries, "That man you said was healthy has just died outside of the door." The doctor thinks quickly. "Turn the body around, so that people will think he was coming in." he said.

There is a beautiful farm near my home. The farmers there grow rice and wheat （小麦） . They have many farm animals there. But they don’t use them to do farm work. They use a tractor（拖拉机）. We often go to the farm after school. We can play with the animals, walk, read books or help the farmers pick corn there. I like walking or doing some reading on the farm because the air there is nice and clean. You can see a lake on the farm. There are many fish in the lake. We often go fishing on Saturdays and Sundays. We often swim in the lake in summer and skate on it in winter, too.
