Surprise

It is a nice day. Fiona is at home. She is on the bed with some books. She likes reading. Her friend, Linda calls her, “Come to my house, Fiona. I have something for you.” Fiona goes to Linda’s house. She sees a red note (便条) on the door. It reads, “Come in, Fiona. And go to the sofa.” On the sofa, she finds a book. On the book is a blue note. It reads, “Go to my table.” On the table, Fiona finds a birthday cake. Next to it, there is a green note. It reads, “Go to my bedroom.” Fiona goes to Linda’s bedroom. And what does she see? Linda, Lucy and Jason are there. “Happy birthday, Fiona,” they say.

I'm having a great time in London! London is a big city. It is in the south of England and it is on the River Thames. Now, I'm staying in a hotel with my friends, Helen and Betty.

It's two o'clock, we are going to visit Buckingham Palace. It's a big and beautiful house. It's the Queen's house. After that, we're going to see Big Ben. I'm going to buy some gifts for you and Sara.

Canada is a huge country, but it has a small population (人口). Not many people live in the countryside, but many enjoy their summer holidays there. Some people have summer houses near lakes and rivers. Others enjoy camping in national parks. There are thirty-nine national parks in Canada.

Winter is long and very cold in most parts of Canada, so Canadians do lots of winter sports. The most popular are ice skating and ice hockey. Many families make ponds in their gardens and let them freeze. Then they can skate on their own ice rink!

Sara is from America. She studies Chinese, maths, art, science, and PE at school in China. Her favourite subject is art. She likes reading, but she likes drawing better. She draws pictures at half past seven every evening. Sara likes the Spring Festival because she likes jiaozi best. Sara enjoys playing basketball with us. She thinks it’s fun and popular. This winter vacation, Sara will go back to America by plane. She is going to visit her grandparents. She will stay there for a month.

Mary is an Australian girl. She is now in Beijing with her grandparents. Mary is studying Chinese, but she can't speak Chinese very well. Sometimes her Chinese friends don't understand her.

It is Saturday morning. Mary is walking in the street. She is going to the supermarket to buy some drinks. She asks a Chinese girl how to get to the supermarket, but the girl can't understand her. Mary takes out a pen and a piece of paper. Then she draws a bottle of juice on it, and shows the picture to the Chinese girl. The Chinese girl understands now, and she shows the way to Mary.

There are all kinds of trains in the world. There are fast trains and slow trains. Bullet trains are very fast. They can move at the speed of 300 km an hour.

Some trains go under the ground and some trains go through mountains. Can a train run over water? Yes, it can. There are many bridges over the river. The trains can easily run over the water. But it is not easy to build bridges.

In big cities, the streets are usually very busy. So you can find trains under the ground and trains on a rail above the streets. They carry people in and out of the city.
