The US Presidents' Pets

President Bush's dogs often play on the lawn (草坪) of the White House, but do you know that he also has cows and a cat? These animals are part of a long history of the US presidential pets from horses and owls to snakes and elephants.

President Bush's dogs are Barney and Miss Beazley. His cat is named India. India has lived with the Bush family for more than ten years! On his farm the President keeps a cow named Ofelia. Bush named Ofelia after a person who worked with him. Bush said that the cow was very friendly.

The 26th president was famous for his pets. His six kids had snakes, dogs, cats, a badger, birds, guinea pigs and more.

Almost every president likes pets. So other countries gave some pets to the US presidents as gifts. The 15th president received lots of elephants from Thailand. The 8th president got a pair of tigers. The 29th president and his family even had a birthday party for their dog Laddie Boy.

My name is John Smith. I live in London. I am en engineer. I work for a telephone company. I like different food. From Monday to Friday, I work hard. I eat simply. I have a large piece of cake and a bottle fo milk for my breakfast. I have a small lunch. I usually eat a small sandwich and a large bottle of juice. I have fish and chips for my supper. After supper I have a chocolate ice cream for my dessert. On Saturdays and Sundays, I go to China Town. I have a bowl of rice and some meat and vegetable. Sometimes I eat Jiaozi or dumplings. They’re delicious. I like Chinese food for my Saturday and Sunday supper.

A young boy was playing with a ball in the street. He kicked it too hard, and it broke the window of a house and fell inside. A lady came to the window with the ball and shouted at the young boy so the young boy ran away, but he still wanted his ball back. A few minutes later, he returned and knocked at the door of the house. When the lady answered it, he said, ‘My father is going to come and fix your window very soon.’

After a few more minutes, a man come to the door with his tools in his hands. So the lady let the boy take his ball away.

When the man finished fixing the window, he said to the lady, “That will cost you ten dollars.”

“But aren’t you the father of that young boy?”the woman asked. “Of course not,” he answered, “Aren’t you his mother?”

An old tiger lives in the jungle. Every day he asks a monkey to bring him some food. One day, the tiger is hungry, “Go and bring me some food.” “I can't do it,” says the monkey, "there is another(另一只) tiger in the jungle. He tells me not to bring you food.” “Show me the tiger.” The monkey takes the tiger to a big river, “There he is! The tiger sees another tiger in the water. He is angry and jumps into the water.”

Sam and Jenny haven't got English class today because their English teacher Miss Beckham is not feeling well. She goes home and stays in bed. After school, they want to see their teacher. So they go to the fruit shop. They need some strawberries, some bananas and some melons. But there aren't any melons in it. Then they go to the McDonald's because Miss Beckham likes hamburgers very much.

Now they have got two hamburgers, some strawberries and some bananas. And Jenny cooks some noodles for her teacher. They are going to Miss Beckham's home.

Food is very important because it can make us strong and healthy. We have three meals every day. The most important meal is breakfast. If we don't have a good breakfast, we can't work or study well during the whole day. We can eat a lot at noon, but we shouldn't eat too much in the evening. We must eat all kinds of food, such as beef, fish, chicken, eggs, vegetables and fruit. Some people like western food. KFC sells American food. Pizza Hut sells Italian food. But so many foreigners enjoy Chinese food now. There are a lot of Chinese restaurants in foreign (外国的) countries.

A Special Dog

Flossie may be a very special teacher at Hylands School in Essex, UK. She can't talk, but everyone makes friends with her. Flossie is a 10-month-old dog.

How does Flossie help in class? On workdays, at the school library, when students are reading English, she listens to them for two or three hours. So English classes are more interesting when students learn dog commands (命令) in English. After class, Flossie can help them cross the road when students take walks with her. And teachers help students not to be afraid of animals.

Studies show that children are very good when they read to pets. So the school can bring in the dog on Tuesday to help students read. Flossie isn't only a little dog. She goes to training classes on weekends and is really one of the best dogs.

"Reading to her could help because dogs don’t say something good or bad, but people do," said 11-year-old student Jacob Wicks.

Long long ago there lived an old tiger in a forest. He did not often go to look for food himself. Every day he made one of the smaller animals bring him something to eat.

One morning the tiger was very hungry. He said to a monkey, 'Go and bring me a fat pig'. "I can't do that, Mr tiger, "said the monkey, 'There is another tiger in the forest. He is very younger and stronger than (比) you. He told me not to bring you anything. "

The old tiger shouted, What! Another tiger? Show me that beast (野兽). I'll speak to him." "Come with me, Mr Tiger. You'll see him yourself," said the monkey.

The monkey took (带) the tiger to a big river. "Look into the river, there he is. See his head! Look at his big teeth. How sharp!" said the monkey. "Grr. . So you told the monkey not to bring me anything! Grr... I'll kill you!

The tiger was very angry and he jumped into the river. He didn't come out again. Because it can't swim.

Mr Black lived in a small town. On the first Sunday in the new house, Mr Black took his new red car out of the garage (车库) and was washing it when a neighbour passed by. When the neighbour saw Mr Black's new car, he said, ‘That's a nice car. Is it yours?’ “Sometimes,” Mr Black answered. The neighbour was surprised and asked, “Sometimes? What do you mean?” “Well,” answered Mr Black, “when there is a party, it is my daughter's. When there's a football game, it is my son's. When I wash it and it looks really nice and clean, it is my wife's. And when it needs gas (汽油), it's mine.

Last Sunday was Mother’s Day. Our family didn’t have dinner at home. We went to a big restaurant. We didn’t eat Chinese food. We had a lot of western food. Beef is my mother’s favourite food. I like chicken best. So I had two chicken sandwiches. My father had a big fish. We had different drinks. Mother drank some Coke, and I had some orange juice. My father likes beer. That night, he had three bottles of beer. We also ate some chips, vegetable salad and ice cream. My mother was happy. And we were happy too.
