Jane Goodall is walking in Tanzania, searching carefully for chimpanzees (黑猩猩). Her love for chimps began when she was just a baby. Her father had bought her a toy when she was a year old, and Jubilee—as her chimp was called, became her constant companion.

Jane Goodall was fascinated with animals and she dreamed of becoming a naturalist in Africa. But with not enough money to even attend college, she found herself working as a waitress to pay her bills.

One day in 1956, a letter arrived from a childhood friend in Kenya, inviting her for a visit. The young Jane Goodall finally bought a ticket to Mombasa.

When 26-year-old Jane Goodall set foot in Tanzania’s Gombe Stream Reserve, not much was known about chimps. Jane did not even have an undergraduate degree, but what she did have was a deep love for the forest, patience and a thirst for learning.

Jane’s findings changed humans’ opinion of chimpanzees in many ways. One of her primary discoveries that have since been observed in other species was the presence of emotion in animals. She also discovered that different from previous belief, chimps are not vegetarians. While their diet is mostly made up of fruits, nuts, and seeds, she observed them hunting and eating the meat of small monkeys.

When Jane published her first book, In the Shadow of Man, she received a lot of criticism (批判). There were complaints that she had named her chimps rather than giving them fixed numbers. She was told that she could not assume that chimps had personalities or emotions. She was also criticized for using feeding stations to attract chimps for observation.

However, on the whole, the contributions that Jane has made to science, not only as a researcher but as a conservationist, are invaluable. She challenged ideas nobody had ever thought to question and her work continues to shape research today.

1.What do we know about Jane?
A.She was born in Kenya.B.She majored in animal science at college.
C.She loved chimps from a very young age.D.She learned about animals from her father.
2.What did Jane find through her observations?
A.Animals have their own languages.B.Animals have emotions.
C.Chimps only eat plants.D.Chimps can use tools.
3.What might be the author’s attitude to Jane?
A.Opposed.B.Concerned.C.Doubtful.D.Appreciative.
4.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Jane: A champion of chimps!B.What separates us from chimps?
C.How to make friends with chimps.D.Jane still fights for endangered chimps.

To create is human. For the past 300,000 years, we’ve been unique in our ability to make art, cuisine, and societies to imagine and create something new where there was nothing before. Now we have company. While you’re reading this sentence, generative artificial intelligence programs are responding to emails, preparing tax returns, and providing health advice.

Artificial intelligence has already had a wide impact on our lives. AIs have been used to price medicine and houses, assemble (组装) cars, determine what ads we see on social media. But generative AI, which can create wholly novel content, is much newer.

Supporters believe this is just the beginning, that generative AI will change the way we work and engage with the world, unlock creativity and scientific discoveries, and allow human beings to achieve previously unimaginable goals.

This shift marks the most important technological breakthrough since social media. Generative AI tools have been adopted greedily in recent months by the public, thanks to programs like ChatGPT, which responds to virtually any question, and Dall-E, which allows you to produce any image you dream up. In January, ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly users.

This craze caught off guard many tech companies and has stimulated an intense race in Silicon Valley. In weeks, Microsoft and Google have shifted their entire corporate strategies to seize control of what they believe profitable. Microsoft is investing $10 billion in Open AI, creator of ChatGPT and Dall-E, and announced plans to integrate generative AI into its Office software and search engine. Google declared a “code red” corporate emergency in response to the success of ChatGPT and rushed its own search-oriented chatbot to market.

But this gold rush could also prove disastrous. In a winner-takes-all battle for power, these companies risk repeating past mistakes, such as prioritizing growth over safety. While there are many potentially good aspects of these new technologies, even tools designed for good can have unforeseen I and ruinous consequences. This is the story of how the gold rush began—and what history tells us about what could happen next.

1.Which of the following is the particular function of generative AI?
A.Price goods.B.Build vehicles.
C.Decide ads on social media.D.Offer health suggestions.
2.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The functions of generative AI.B.The programs of generative AI.
C.People’s interest in generative AI.D.Companies’ investment in generative AI.
3.What does Microsoft plan to do?
A.Shift its focus to Office software.
B.Invest in another generative AI start-up.
C.Integrate its search engine into Office software.
D.Combine generative AI with its existing products.
4.Why does the author mention the gold rush in the last paragraph?
A.To emphasise the importance of history.
B.To advocate the use of new technologies.
C.To put off the development of generative AI.
D.To warn of the potential danger of generative AI.

The benefits of walking are many, but deciding how many miles to cover and how much time to spend walking each day is another matter.

Studies have shown that the average American takes between 3,000 and 4,000 steps daily doing everyday tings — about 1.5 to 2 miles. 1. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises most adults to aim for 10,000 steps a day or about 5 miles. And the recommendation contributes to more positive health outcomes.

2. You can measure your efforts in quantities of time instead. “As a walker, you should aim for at least 30 minutes per day, or a total of 150 minutes per week,” says Austin, a licensed psychotherapist. What’s more, if 30 minutes of walking is unrealistic for you to do all at once, then breaking it up into three short, 10-minute sessions. 3.

It may also be helpful to health to make walking a part of one’s daily routine. People can take the stairs instead of the elevator, park at the other end of the lot and walk a further distance to a store’s entrance when shopping. 4. Then walk the rest of the way home. All these additional steps can be acquired creatively, beyond fixed walking time.

On top of such physical benefits, walking has been shown to improve sleep and mental health including mood and self-esteem. 5. Therefore, it is free and well accepted by the majority of people. If one is ready to improve overall levels of fitness, walking ticks all the right boxes.

A.Combine walking with everyday routine.
B.They will provide the same health benefits.
C.What if counting results by miles isn’t your thing?
D.Still, why not get off public transportation a stop early?
E.Walking sessions should be continuous to be beneficial.
F.That amount alone has been shown to lower one’s death risk.
G.Walking requires no special equipment, gym membership or training.

1.3 million people in the Netherlands are older than 75 years — and one large supermarket chain is making sure they’re not getting too lonely in their elder years.

The Dutch government with its campaign (运动), “One Against Loneliness”, has encouraged organizations, towns, companies, and individuals to find solutions. Jumbo, the second largest Dutch supermarket chain, is doing its part with creative chat checkouts (付款台).

The idea for the “Kletskassa”, which translates to “chat checkout”, started more than two years ago — and in the summer of 2019 the first Kletskassa was opened in Vlijmen in Noord-Brabant.

This resulted in many positive reactions from customers — and now Jumbo is swelling the project further: By this time next year, there will be chat checkouts in 200 stores across the country where more people can go for a conversation. When choosing the stores, areas where loneliness is a major factor are carefully considered.

Colette Cloosterman-van Eerd, CCO of Jumbo and the driving force behind the campaign against loneliness, is closely involved (参与) in the project. She said, “Many people, especially the elderly, sometimes feel lonely. As a family business and supermarket chain, we are at the heart of society.”

“Our stores are an important meeting place for many people and we want to play a role in identifying and reducing loneliness. We do this in various ways, including our Kletskassas. We are proud that many of our cashiers like to take a seat behind a Kletskassa. They support the project and want to help people to make real contact with them out of interest.”

“It is a small action, but very valuable, especially in a world that is digitizing (数字化) and getting faster and faster.”

1.What makes Jumbo start the “Kletskassa” project?
A.Jumbo wants to meet the need of young customers.
B.The supermarket chain is thirsty for making more money.

4.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.The Dutch government launches a campaign against loneliness.
B.Jumbo helps the elderly fight against loneliness.
C.More attention should be paid to the elderly.
D.Fast digitization is making us more lonely.

Wisconsin’s Great Lakes are home to great lighthouses. Here are some lighthouses worth visiting along Lake Michigan, from south to north.

Wind Point, Racine

This 108-foot lighthouse on a point north of Racine was built in 1880. It’s open for tours and climbs up the tower from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the first Sunday of the month, June through October, and from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the Saturday before that Sunday, July through September. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids aged between 6 and 11. The park and beach around the lighthouse are open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

North Point, Milwaukee

This 74-foot lighthouse alongside a Queen Anne style keeper’s quarters is a landmark in the city’s Lake Park. Tours are now offered from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday year round, plus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the summer. Tours cost $8 for adults, $5 for seniors (65+) and $5 for students and kids (5-11).

Port Washington Breakwater (防波堤)

This Art Deco-style lighthouse replaced an older wooden structure in 1935 as part of a Works Progress Administration project. Tours aren’t available of the small structure, but visitors can walk along the 2,500-foot breakwater to get a closer look.

Rawley Point, Two Rivers

This lighthouse is worth a visit not only for its steel tower rising 113 feet above the beach, but also for its location in Point Beach State Forest. Tours are not available of the working lighthouse, but it’s viewable and photographable from the beach. In addition to six miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the state forest has 17 miles of hiking trails to explore.

Around the country and around the world, there is no shortage of human suffering. Poverty, disease, violence, hurricanes, wildfire and more are constantly troubling humanity, and even our best efforts thus far can’t address all of everybody’s needs. Many are looking for places to cut funding, and one of the first places that comes up in conversation is excessive spending on space exploration. What good is it to conduct microgravity experiments repeatedly when children are starving? Why launch so many space-related projects when nuclear war threatens our planet?

This is a line of thinking that has been coming up throughout history. Yes, it’s short-sighted, in that it fails to recognize that our greatest problems require long-term investment, and that society’s greatest advances come about through hard work, research, development of decades after that is made. Investing in science is investing in the betterment of humanity.

Over these years, much of the results of the space research have been adapted to be applicable to our daily lives. For example, NASA’s advancements in the areas of robotics have given manufacturers an additional basis for the development of more advanced artificial limbs. Additionally, certain nutritional enrichment ingredients that were developed by NASA have been integrated into baby food formula.

Space technology has also helped improve economies. Within the next three years, the space exploration and space tourism industry are expected to be valued at 3 trillion USD. It is true that for every dollar we spend on the space program, the US economy receives about $8 of economic benefit. Space exploration can also serve as amotivation for children to enter the fields of science and engineering.

To many people, the idea of space travel may still seem far from practical. However, I believe that it is important that we keep going forward or we’ll risk delaying further discoveries and technological advancements that will be beneficial for us.

1.According to paragraph 1, what do some people think of space exploration?
A.Useless.B.Wasteful.
C.Beneficial.D.Harmful.
2.What does the underlined word “that” in the second paragraph refer to?
A.The advance.B.The development.
C.The investment.D.The problem.
3.How does NASA’s advancements contribute to the development of artificial limbs?
A.By providing a foundation.
B.By adding certain materials.
C.By acting as a driving force.
D.By helping realize the mass production.
4.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.The payback of space programs is very high.
B.Space travel appears to be within people’s reach.
C.More and more children are interested in science.
D.New technological discoveries have been delayed.

My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t got any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.

Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it. I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles (肌肉) shaking my set.

When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.

1.Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?
A.He got an older model than he had expected.
B.He couldn’t return it when it was broken.
C.He could have bought it at a lower price.
D.He failed to find any movie shows on it.
2.Which of the following can best replace the phrase “signed off” in Paragraph 1?
A.ended all their programsB.provided fewer channels
C.changed to commercialsD.showed all-night movies
3.How did the author finally get his TV set working again?
A.By shaking and hitting it.B.By turning it on and off.
C.By switching channels.D.By having it repaired.
4.How does the author sound when telling the story?
A.CuriousB.Anxious
C.CautiousD.Humorous
