Finally came Wednesday! I walked onto campus feeling nervous even though I had walked these same grounds for two years because my junior high school is next door. Everything looked and felt different now that I was in senior high.

I looked at my schedule. First period — German. Our German teacher was very friendly and I liked her from the beginning. What I didn't like, though, was that I was surrounded by students from other grades, with only five familiar faces.

Then I had to walk all the way across campus and up three flights of stairs to get to my second period — biology. Our teacher's name is Ms.Compeau, and I think that she will teach us a lot this year because she is very to the point. She also has her unique way of saying “be quiet,” she says “alligator.” She explained that she is the king, or should I say queen, of the class because alligators are the “king of the swamps (沼泽).”

My third class was English. After surviving two periods without too much of a challenge, I began to feel good. However, the third period changed everything. Mr.V.,my English teacher, told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing, but 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was scared. He also talked about how important it was to be focused. Last year was not a very “focused” year for me. While doing homework, I was often talking on the phone, or busy with a conversation on Facebook. I planned on stepping it up this year because I wanted to stay an honor student.

1.What did the author mainly write about in this passage?
A.Her new teachers.B.Her plan for the new year.
C.Her first day of senior high.D.Her schedule for Wednesday.
2.What should students do when Ms. Compeau says "alligator"?
A.Sit still.B.Stop talking.
C.Listen to the teacher.D.Look at the blackboard.
3.How did the author find her first two classes?
A.Unattractive.B.Informative.C.Very tiring.D.Pretty easy.
4.Why did the author feel scared during the third period?
A.Because she couldn't focus on her work.
B.Because she found the class demanding.
C.Because she didn't like the teacher.
D.Because she did poorly at school.

My parents came to the US from India in the 1960s, along with other immigrants from India. Back then, there were few Indians anywhere around the US. My father came to Kansas, where he would get his Ph.D. Six months later, my mother came with the three of us kids — my sister, my brother, and me. We were just six, five and three years old then.

It was the very first winter when we were in Kansas. It was so cold, but we didn’t have heavy coats or warm clothes. We didn’t have a concept of how cold it really could be in the Midwest, and there was a new surprise every day. We didn’t have a car or anything like that, and my dad didn’t have a US driver’s license. But anyway, my father was studying for his Ph.D., and he would walk up and down a big hill to and from the campus on a regular basis.

Since I was three years old, I didn’t go to school, but my sister and brother were in school. My father had to walk down the big hill to take them to school every day and then walk back up the hill to go to university. After about three weeks of living like this, a woman called Valerie, whose son John was in the same class as my brother, started noticing them. On a very cold snowy morning, when they went to school as usual,Valerie passed by. She pulled up and said, “I see you on the way every day. Don’t you feel cold without coats?”My father responded,“We didn’t expect the weather would be so cold in Kansas.”Valerie said,“Maybe I can take your daughter and son to school. Would you like a ride?”

Paragraph 1:

Hearing that, my dad nodded with great joy.

Later, Valerie and her family became so dear to my family.

Cook in the kitchen

Earlier last month, my parents and I had a free day — a rare event for us. 1.

For our weekend menu, we decided to make smoked pork. I found this recipe online. It looked interesting and the steps were simple. So we decided to make it for dinner one weekend.

First, according to the recipe, the pork needed to be salted. The process would take a long time. 2. Mom first thawed (解冻) the pork and then spread salt, sugar and pepper or the surface, After that, she wrapped the pork in a plastic film (塑料薄膜) and refrigerated it for two days.

3. To make smoked dishes indoors, we needed to use aluminum foil (铝箔). After searching for it for a long time, we finally found the foil in the cupboard.

After that, Dad was responsible for slicing (切片) the pork, Mother was responsible for preparing the ingredients (佐料). I was responsible for spreading the black tea and sugar for smoking on the aluminum foil and then a layer of baking paper. 4. After more than ten minutes of smoking and a few minutes of frying, the smoked pork was complete.

5. When combined with an apple vinegar sauce, the meat was even more delicious.

A.It was easy for me to make the food.
B.Pork is the main meat source of our food.
C.We decided to cook together in the kitchen.
D.Finally, I put the pork on the smoking shelf.
E.So, Mom started working on it early the night before.
F.Two days later, the pork was ready for the next steps.
G.The pork was very delicious and contained the special smell of black tea.

“We have Dante, Shakespeare and Du Fu (712 — 770). These poets create the very values by which poetry is judged,”said Harvard professor Stephen Owen in Du Fu, China’s Greatest Poet, a BBC documentary.

Despite the fact that Du Fu is usually mentioned in the same breath as Dante and Shakespeare, he has remained largely unknown in the Western world for long. However, with the screening of the first English-language documentary feature about the poet, the days of Du Fu as China’s best-kept literary secret seem to be just numbered.

It is written and presented by Michael Wood, a skilled television historian who also directed other China-related documentaries such as The Story of China (2016) and The Story of China’s Reform and Opening Up(2018).

From the Yellow River to the Yangtze Gorges, and down to the forested hills of Hunan province, Wood visited a number of places such as the poet’s birthplace Gongyi in Henan province and Tang Dynasty capital Chang’an, today’s Xi’an. Along the way, he met and talked to ordinary people, dancers and musicians, who helped to tell the fantastic story of the poet. Interviews with famous scholars specializing in Chinese literature also helped present a clearer picture of the poet’s life experiences, literary significance and his friendship with Li Bai, another great Chinese poet.

Born in 712, Du Fu lived in the Tang Dynasty, a time marked by extraordinary cultural achievements. However, after a civil unrest, Du Fu, the former civil servant at the Tang court, was forced to be come a porter, and suffered from starvation. Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing, pouring out his concern for his-country and people as well as celebrating the simple joys of life.

Du’s poetry reflects the country’s historical events mirrored in his own spiritual journey, so he becomes a part of the emotional vocabulary of Chinese culture, said Stephen Owen, who in 2016 completed the eight-year-long project to translate DuFu’s 1,400 poems into English.

1.The underlined part in paragraph 2 implies that the documentary will help________.
A.create the values of poetry
B.the West know more about Du Fu
C.keep the secrets in Du Fu’s poems
D.Du Fu become one of the top 3 poets
2.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.Du Fu’s colorful life experiences.
B.Local people’s admiration for Du Fu.
C.Famous scholars’ research findings on Du Fu.
D.Michael Wood’s effort in making the documentary.
3.Which of the following can best describe Du Fu?
A.Inspiring and helpful.B.Tough and responsible.
C.Easy-going and careful.D.Generous and hardworking.
4.What is probably the best title for the passage?
A.Du Fu’s poetry wins world’s recognition
B.Du Fu’s poems are translated into English
C.BBC documentary reflects Chinese culture
D.BBC documentary presents China’s Shakespeare
