Many people enjoy skiing, but more and more people are trying snowboarding(滑雪板运动). No one is sure who started snowboarding. Many people think it was Jack Burchett. In 1929, Burchett made a simple snowboard out of wood and tied it to his feet.
Snowboarding is now a popular winter sport, but twenty years ago, snowboarders could not do it in ski resorts(滑雪胜地) because resorts’ owners thought it was a dangerous activity. Snowboarders usually found other places to enjoy the sport. Today snow boarders are welcome in most ski resorts. Snowboarding has become an Olympic sport.
Snowboarding is an exciting sport, but it can also be dangerous. Many snowboarders get hurt every year. Before snowboarding, you should take lessons and make sure you are in good health. You should also check your snowboard to make sure nothing is wrong with it. Remember, never snowboard alone.

Everyone knows hand-washing is important. But a new study shows how washing your hands often, and at the right time, can have an effect on your family’s risk(危险) for getting sick. Most studies on hand-washing focus on medical and food service workers. But washing hands at home is a way to stop viruses 病毒from spreading. Several studies show hands are the single most important way for all types of infections. Even though most people know to wash their hands after using the toilet.
Researchers found 83 percent of virus was on the surface of bathroom, living room and kitchen. Another study found that at homes where salmonella(沙门氏菌) cases had been found, the bacteria remained there for three weeks. That’s why people should pay attention to cleaning such surfaces regularly and always wash hands after touching them. In one study, a volunteer touched a door handle that had been with a virus. He then shook hands with other volunteers, and further tests showed he had spread the virus to six people.
The study authors note that time of hand-washing is the key. It’s obvious to wash hands after using the toilet, before eating or handling food. Other important times for hand-washing are after cleaning up a pet, or after touching garbage cans, cleaning clothes, dish rags that may have come into contact with raw food.
It may be hard to believe that something as simple as regular hand-washing can make a difference in your family’s health, considering what happened in Hong Kong during the 2003 outbreak of SARS, a severe kind of disease. The outbreak caused the public pay more attention to their basic hygiene(卫生) habits, including regular hand-washing. Not only was the SARS stopped, but other cases of illnesses, including the flu, stopped.

When you look at the night sky, what you see are actually lots of “power plants”. Every star makes a huge amount of energy through nuclear fusion (核聚变). For years, scientists have tried to make this kind of energy. They need to make a “mini star” on Earth. Recently, some scientists made a big step forward.
In February, the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy in Oxfordshire, UK, doubled a world record set in 1997. The machine there, named Jet, used fusion engines (发动机) to make the same amount of energy as four wind turbines (涡轮机) make, reported The Guardian.
In the past, no experiment could make more energy than what was used to start the fusion engine. This new experiment, although only lasting five seconds, showed it’s possible to make more power.
The reaction (反应) stopped when the equipment (设备) got too hot. This problem can be solved with cooling systems. Future fusion reactions may last much longer than five seconds-minutes or even hours.
Why do we care so much about star power? Fusion reactions would provide power to everyone on Earth-enough for everyone to use for thousands or millions (百万) of years. They’re also clean— they don’t produce carbon dioxide or radioactive (放射性的) waste.
You may wonder why fusion energy is so hard to make. Creating conditions similar to a star is not easy. The machine must reach temperatures as high as 10 times that of the sun’s core (核).
Even so, it’s time to get excited about star power. If it can be successfully rolled out (开展), it will be a landmark (里程碑) in human history.
