Recent climate change reports have painted a shocking picture of the earth’s future, but a tiny school of just 400 students decided to change the situation.

In 2021, Huonville High School in Tasmania, Australia beat other competitors from around the world and won the Zayed Future Energy Prize. The school used the $133,000 prize to completely change an old building, turning it into the Zayed Future Energy Center, where students can learn how to use clean, renewable energy sources just like sunshine in everyday life.

The new building is equipped(配备) with solar panels, special windows and other high-tech things. Now, there are also some bikes available. Student volunteers ride these bikes to produce electricity that can be used to boil oil and make small fried cakes as a sweet reward for their own efforts. So far, the students’ efforts at the center have saved their school more than $44,000 on its bills.

Teacher and program director Nel Smit says the center has become an important place for students while drawing attention to a topic many people choose to ignore. “The center is a meeting place for students. but it’s also a place where we hold demonstration(示范) events for the whole community?” she explains, “It has raised their awareness. They try to use clean and renewable energy in their life.”

“Being part of the center has surely helped me feel like I’m doing something. I’m making a change, and my life is more and more eco-friendly,” says the student Aisha Fisher. “Running away from climate change as a young person doesn’t help.” Aisha says. “The best thing you can do is to look at it from a positive, realistic opinion, and see what you can do by yourself.”

We experienced a special period in 2020. Xu Yi, a middle school student from Hubei, told something 1．(interest) to us. Let’s check out his story and resolution for the new term.

When Xu Yi was learning English as 2．exchange student in the UK, his English friend 3．(invite) him, to take a Chinese culture course. Then, at 9:30 a. m. the next day, it finally came. He followed the friend to the classroom and 4．(welcome) by classmates. They gave him presents 5． moved and excited him.

The lesson was about an ancient Chinese character(字体) called Xiaozhuan. The teacher 6． (clear) explained it from its history to development, how it worked in society and why it was so popular in Qin Dynasty. She also taught the differences 7． Xiaozhuan and the modern Chinese character.

On the one hand, Xu Yi takes 8．(proud) in Chinese culture. On the other hand, it’s a shame that he knows almost nothing about it. As a senior high school student, he is going to read as many books as possible 9．(open) his mind. He hopes every Chinese person will love and value Chinese culture. After all, everyone is responsible 10． keeping it.

1970 was World Conservation Year. Everyone must know that the world is in danger. _______ is one example of the _______. Now fifteen million young people in many countries are studying _______ and the country around them. In some countries they spend much time as “conservation volunteers”. They plant trees and help to _______ wild birds and animals.

I will always remember the date June 7th. It was the most terrible day in my life.

When I woke up that morning, it was already about 8 o'clock. Oh, no, I 1． (oversleep). I missed the first class. I rushed out of the door without breakfast. Five minutes2．,I got to the bus stop. When I waited for the bus, it began to rain 3．(heavy). Before I found the umbrella in my backpack, I had completely got wet. How4．(embarrass) it was! Then, a lady behind me asked 5．I needed any help. I refused with thanks, and rushed back home to change my clothes. When I got home, I found I 6． (leave) the keys on the table in the living room. I was really 7． (disappoint) and had to return to the bus stop. After that, I got on the bus . I was8． tired and sleepy that I fell asleep. Oh, I realized that it was Sunday.

When they arrived in the courtroom (法庭), the King and Queen of Hearts were sitting on their thrones. The room was full of birds and animals and a complete pack of playing cards.

The Knave of Hearts was standing ______ two soldiers at the front of the room. There were chains ______ his hands.

Alice saw ______ there, too. He had a piece of paper in one hand and ______ in the other. In the middle of the room there was a table and on it there was a big plate of jam tarts. When Alice saw them, she started to feel ______.

“They are probably for tea,” she thought. “I hope the trial isn’t long.”

She began to ______ everything in the courtroom because she didn’t want to think about the tarts.

“That’s the judge (法官),” she said. “He wears a big wig (假发).” The judge was the King and he was wearing the wig ______ his crown. He looked very silly.

“And those twelve creatures in that box are the jurors (陪审员),” Alice said. She felt very ______ with her herself. She was only a small girl but she knew a lot of difficult words.

The jurors were very busy. They were writing on their ______.

“What are they writing?” Alice asked the Gryphon, who was standing next to her.

“Their names,” it said. “They don’t want to forget them.”

“______ things!” Alice said.

As she said this, the jurors wrote the words “stupid things” on their blackboards. One of them couldn’t spell the word “stupid” and had to ______ his friend.

Then the White Rabbit ______ his trumpet (喇叭).

“What’s the crime?” the King asked.

The Rabbit read: “The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts. All on a summer day: The Knave of Hearts, he stole those tarts and took them all away!”

“What’s your verdict (裁定)?” the King asked the jurors.

“No, no, Your Majesty! We must call a ______ first,” the White Rabbit said.

“______ the first witness!” the King shouted.

The White Rabbit blew his trumpet three times and the Mad Hatter came in. He was carrying a teacup and a piece of bread and butter.

“I’m sorry, Your Majesty, ______ I didn’t finish my tea before I came here.”

Since our twins began learning to walk, my wife and I have kept telling them that our sliding（推拉式的）glass door is just a window. The _________ is simple. If we admit it is a door, they’ll want to _________. It will drive us crazy. It appears that the kids know the _________ though we have been continually telling them the other way.

I hate lying to kids. One day they’ll wake up and _________ that everything they’ve always known about windows is a lie. I wonder if _________ should always tell the truth no matter what result it may lead to. I have a very strong fear that the lie we’re telling will _________ our children. Windows and doors have important symbolic（象征性的）meanings. I’m telling them they can’t open what they _________ know is a door. Later in _________ they may come to a door which could be a good chance. Instead of opening the door and taking the chance, they just _________ it and wonder, “What if it isn’t a door?” That is, “What if it isn’t a __________ chance?”

Maybe it’s an unreasonable fear. But the bottom line is that I shouldn’t lie to my kids. So when they come to other doors in life, they will just open them and walk through.

塞翁失马，焉知非福

A long time ago, there lived an old man. He raised the finest horses in all the land. His family was happy and he was rich ________ friends, too.

One night, the man’s prized horse, a big black horse, was ________. The old man was sad. ________ came to say how sorry they were. The old man said only, “What will be, will be.” And he went on with his work.
