My name is Carol. Today let me show you around my community. In front of my apartment building, there is a very small garden with some tables and chairs. I love taking a walk in the garden in summer.

After getting out of the garden, I can get to a big market soon. I walk past the market when I go to work every day. There are vegetables and fruit in the market. I often go there with my children and we buy some fruit. After walking past the market, I’m on Main Road. There are a lot of shops on this road, like shoe shops, clothes shops.

After walking along Main Road for five minutes, I can get to a bus stop. I only need to pay (付费) 1 yuan, and then I can go to work by bus. That’s very convenient.

I feel very happy to live in a community like this.

Every year on April 22, the world celebrates Earth Day. It’s a day that reminds people to protect our Earth, and it is a special day that celebrates the earth as well.

Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, in San Francisco, California. Every year, over 100 different countries join together in the celebration of Earth Day. It is the largest, most celebrated environmental event around the world. On Earth Day, we remember nature and learn ways to protect our environment.

What Earth Day is all about is learning about and protecting our planet. People all over the world celebrate our efforts to protect plants and animals and to clean up the world we live in.

We can do lots of things for the earth. Here are some ideas to keep in mind.

*Recycle cans, bottles, and paper. Save them at home and at school, and help your family recycle them.

*Ride your bike or walk to school to keep the air clean.

*Use both sides of your paper at school and at home.

*Turn off the TV when you’ve finished watching it.

*Don’t leave the water running while you brush your teeth.

*Turn off the lights when you leave the room.

And remember, don’t ever think you’re not important to our earth. You are! That’s because Earth Day reminds us that we all share the same planet. Sharing Earth means that taking responsibility for what we use and how we use it. It is a day to think of the environmental changes we face and how to solve them. Protecting Earth is every person’s and every country’s responsibility.

We have only one earth. It is the only environment for humans, animals and plants to live or grow in. However, we are polluting our earth every day. Good news is that the whole world has realized the serious problems and has taken action to fight against it.

World No Tobacco Day (May 31)

The first World No Tobacco Day is April 7, 1988. Since 1989, it was changed to be May 31st every year. The purpose of the World No Tobacco Day is to encourage people not to smoke.

World Water Day (March 22, 1993)

United Nations named 22 March as the first World Water Day in 1993. It’s a day to celebrate water. It’s a day to prepare for how we manage water in the future. It is celebrated around the world every year.

Earth Hour (2007)

Earth Hour started for the first time on March 31, 2007 in Sydney, Australia. Since then, the last Saturday of every March was named as Earth hour day that year. On March 19, 2016, more than 350 famous buildings in 178 countries around the world turned off the lights for one hour to remind people to save electrical power.

A biodegradable(生物可降解的) mobile phone was introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage people to recycle. Scientists have thought of a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic, but overtime it can break down into the soil without giving out any poisonous chemicals(有毒的化学物质). British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover with a sunflower seed(种子). When this cover changes into waste, it forms nitrates(硝酸盐). These feed the seed and help the flower grow. “We have only put sunflower seeds into the cover so far. But we're trying to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time,” said one scientist.

As phone technology is developing so quickly, people are always throwing their mobile phones away. This means producers are under pressure(压力) to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be thrown away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal(金属) and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can reduce the harm to nature, according to the scientists. “The seed is released(释放) and the flower grows in the pot, so you don't have to worry about the phone when you have finished using it,” said Kerry Kirwan, the leader of the research team, which is based at the University of Warwick in Britain.
