The Bird’s Christmas Tree

It’s a sun shining winter afternoon. In a small yard in Luss, Scotland, Kate and Effie (61)1． (tie) the baskets to the branches（树枝）of the Christmas tree and filling them with corns. The children (62)2．   (work) busily but happily for many hours, making the little baskets for the birds.

What happened next? As you can see at the beginning of the story, the birds are living happily. With the birds and the tree, the children are also very happy. It is hard to tell which are happier, the birds or the children. I believe the tree is the happiest of all.

The way we spend our time can be put into three “bottles”. These are the Necessary Tasks Bottle, the Voluntary Tasks Bottle and the Happiness Bottle.

Every day, we spend time 1． the Necessary Tasks Bottle with useful things, like making money, doing housework, and paying bills.

We then fill 2． bottle with Voluntary Tasks. These are things we do for others, we may not enjoy, but we do them anyway. This bottle gets filled with tasks like taking children to activities, cooking family meals, and washing clothes for family.

3．, we often forget to fill the third bottle—the Happiness Bottle. This is the bottle we fill with activities that make us happy. Is your Happiness Bottle sometimes 4． at the end of the day? Between doing all the Necessary and Voluntary Tasks, time flies by, and before we know, it is time for bed. We all have days like that.

Cars powered by gasoline（汽油）were sold for many years before cars that use electricity. Car companies are now making cars that are fully powered by electricity only. How do these electric cars measure up to（符合标准）traditional gasoline cars?

Electric and gasoline cars look similar on the outside. They have very different parts under their hoods（引擎盖）, though. Electric cars have one main moving part: the motor. But gasoline cars have hundreds of parts, often requiring frequent maintenance（保养）. Having fewer parts makes the electric car cheaper to maintain and less likely to have mechanical（机械的）problems.

Electric cars are energy efficient（高效的）, also making them cheaper to operate. It costs about $1.00 to travel 43 miles in an electric car. But it costs about $1.25 to go 18 miles in a gasoline car. Basically, an electric car can go twice as far as a gas car for the same price.

Electric cars do not have tailpipe emissions（尾气排放）, making them more friendly to the environment, too.

While some details make electric cars seem attractive, other details aren’t as favourable. For example, some electric cars can travel only 60 to 120 miles on a full charge（充电）. Most gas cars can drive hundreds of miles on a full tank（油箱）.

An electric car has to stop more often to get recharged. Therefore, a gas car would be a better option（选择）if you have far to drive. And electric cars aren’t as convenient（方便的）to power up as gas cars are. There are plenty of gas stations, but not many charging stations for electric cars. Then, once an electric car reaches a charging station, it can take up to six hours to charge.

There are certainly advantages to both electric cars and gasoline cars. It’s good to know that there is a choice. Which one do you prefer? It’ s up to you.

New kinds of night markets have come out all over the country. Some of the markets have the same opening hours, others have a pop-up style. Bringing in the latest fashions or copying ancient(古代的) Chinese markets, they have become very popular with young shoppers.

The night market at Xixili street in Haikou, Hainan has attracted many people. Different from more traditional night markets, “you can see pet culture(文化), handmade culture and other popular subcultures,” said Wang Yaqi to China Daily, who is a student from Hainan University.

Xu Dongjie, a pet stall(摊位) owner at the market, told Xinhua that more people are interested in her pets than at her pet shop. For her, being part of the market is also a way to make friends with pet lovers.

In a night market, people can also have a taste of traditional culture. At a night market held in Haikou, 30 stalls brought back the look of streets during the Song Dynasty. Stall workers decorated their stalls and dressed up in the style of that period.

Many cities are trying night markets to make the economy(经济) better. The “Night Touring of Qinhuai” project in Jiangsu has become a local hot spot. In Chongqing, one night market is full of stalls set up in the trunks(后备箱) of cars.

The government has encouraged businesses to develop a night-time economy(经济). Night markets play a big part in the night-time economy. The term “night-time economy” can be dated back to the 1970s in Britain. It means all economy activities that take place between 18:00 to 6:00 the next day. This kind of economy activity began to take shape in China’s coastal cities as early as the 1980s.
