Dogs are smart. They are fun pets and great friends. Dogs can hear and smell better than we can. They learn fast and like to be helpful. Some dogs are trained to help with very special work.

People who can’t hear may miss important sounds. They won’t hear an alarm clock, a doorbell or someone calling their name. A hearing dog is trained to alert them to sounds.

Therapy dogs help people to feel better. They are gentle and patient. They visit people in nursing homes, hospitals and homeless shelters. They provide quiet company when someone is sad or ill or feels lonely.

A guide dog is trained to help someone who can’t see. The dog always stays at the person’s side. The guide dog helps a blind person cross a busy street safely. It can warn the person about curbs (路缘石) and steps.

Sheep spend most of their lives in a large grassy pasture (牧场). They may wander to different areas. Sometimes the farmer needs them all in one place. The herding (放牧的) dog finds all the sheep and moves them to that spot.

Sometimes people are lost in the woods or are trapped in a building that fell down. Search-and-rescue dogs find people who are lost, hurt or trapped. They move slowly and carefully, finding people rescue workers might not see.

Big Newfoundland dogs are strong swimmers. In Italy, they work as lifeguards. They will jump in the water and pull a drowning person to safety. Some can even jump into the water from a helicopter.

Dogs help us do many types of jobs. Can you think of other great jobs for dogs?

Sam was a fifteen-year-old boy living with his little sister, Julie. Their parents had passed away long ago. Sam had taken care of Julie by himself.
One day, Sam woke up at three in the morning as usual. When Julie was sleeping alone, Sam left their little house to send newspapers. When he found an old man sitting in front of their house, Sam was so surprised that he stopped to look at him closely. It was an icy morning and he looked very cold.

Wearing a mask while sleeping at home sounds a little crazy. But Wu Keying did so during the novel coronavirus outbreak. “I feared that I would be infected. Now I know it’s not necessary to do so. But I am still worried about when the epidemic will end,” said the 13-year-old from Chengdu, Sichuan province. Being stuck inside makes her feel anxious.

In fact, many people have experienced feelings like Wu. Nearly 80 percent of people are deeply worried about the outbreak, while 40percent strongly fear it, according to a survey released on Jan 27 by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

These emotions (情绪) are normal for people who are going through stressful events, according to Wang Weihua, an expert on positive psychology (积极心理学). “Some stressful reactions (反应) can help us fight the virus,” Wang said. “We take more protective actions, such as wearing masks and washing hands often, for example.”

But if these feelings last too long, it will be bad for our mental (心理的) health, Wang added. So how can we stay positive?

First, we should learn to accept unexpected changes in life, wrote Xiong Kewei, a psychological consultant (咨询师) at Beijing Normal University. We might learn new lessons from these changes, like respecting (尊重) nature and being more responsible (有担当的).

Another useful way to stay positive is to stick to a normal routine (正常作息).

“The key is to take good care of the body, arrange a reasonable schedule, ensure adequate sleep and diet, and get the necessary rest and relaxation,” Zhang Hong, deputy chief physician of Wuhan Mental Health Center, told China Daily.

1.Wu Keying wore a mask while sleeping because ________.
A.her parents told her to do so
B.it’s the best way to avoid infection
C.one of her family members was infected
D.she was scared of being infected
2.What do we know from Paragraph 2?
A.Many people feel worried about the virus.
B.We shouldn’t worry too much about the virus.
C.Only 40 percent of people worry about the outbreak.
D.More than 80 percent of people wear masks while sleeping.
3.According to Wang Weihua, ________ can help us fight the virus.
a. wearing masks
b. being stress-free
c. staying positive
d. washing our hands
A.abcB.abdC.acdD.bcd
4.The last three paragraphs are mainly about________.
A.how to stay away from the coronavirusB.how psychologists helped patients

Forgot your password (密码) or your ID? Well, you’ll never forget your face. Using your face as your ID is quick and convenient. You could take the subway or board a flight with just your face alone. This is how facial recognition (人脸识别) works. It has also been used to catch criminals (罪犯).

In China, facial recognition systems have been used in many areas. In Zhengzhou, people can now get on the subway by using facial recognition technology. They just need to link their online payment systems to the subway’s smartphone app. Students at Peking University can pass through the school’s gate by scanning their face.

However, there are no laws to regulate (规范) the use and collection of facial information. Many citizens are worried about the collection and use of this information by governments and companies. Why is it necessary to collect data (数据) about your face and what will the data be used for? These are some common questions on the facial recognition.

“I feel uncomfortable because I don’t know how the company is using my facial information or whether the company will leak my facial information,” Feng Yi, a tourism company employee (雇员) said. Leaks are a problem because there is a long history of companies failing to protect our data. When someone steals your personal information, you can change your bank card and password, but can you change your face when your facial information is stolen?

As facial recognition is used more and more in our daily lives — from college campuses and subways to street corners and smartphones — we must ask ourselves whether this new technology is worth the risk or not.

1.It’s ________ to use your face as your ID.
A.slowB.inconvenientC.quick and convenientD.complex (复杂的)
2.What has not facial recognition been used to do?
A.To take the subway.B.To board a flight.
C.To catch criminals.D.To borrow money from a bank.
3.The underlined word “leak” probably means in Chinese in this passage.
A.收藏B.归类C.转让D.泄漏
4.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Using face as your ID is quick and inconvenient.
B.Students at Peking university can go through any gate with facial recognition.
C.Many people worry that there is risk in using facial recognition.
D.You can change your password if your facial information is stolen.
5.What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards facial recognition?
A.The writer suggests that we ourselves should be very cautious (谨慎).
B.The writer doesn’t support facial recognition at all.
C.The writer doesn’t express at all.
D.The writer supports facial recognition.

If you’re feeling hungry, what’s the easiest way to satisfy your hunger? Many of us will reach for a takeaway menu (外卖菜单) and order some delicious but possibly unhealthy food.

Eating choices are endless, and takeaway delivery apps make ordering food quick and convenient. We can feed our cravings at the push of a button. And during the recent outbreak of COVID-19, it provided a lifeline to those stuck at home with nothing to cook or who lacked the skills to prepare a meal for themselves. It’s reported that in the UK alone, people eat three million takeaway meals a day, and the three biggest delivery apps together offer a choice of 100 cuisines from 60,000 restaurants.

It’s no wonder we like to skip the grocery shopping (食品杂货店) and tuck into (痛快地吃) something that someone else has prepared. But ordering ready-prepared food can come at a price both financially and to our health. Eating too much processed (加工好) unhealthy fast food has some effects on obesity (肥胖) and the risk of developing certain diseases.

Of course, reducing salt, sugar and fat is one way to make takeaway food healthier. But the best choice is to find a cookbook and try making your own meals. And if you haven’t got time, try ordering a healthier meal from the menu.
