Once, an old man lived in a small country. One day, the old man went to meet the king.
“I can make animals speak like men,” he said to the king. Of course the king was very surprised. He asked, “Can you make my horse speak like a person?” The old man thought for a while and said, “Yes, I can! However, I need ten years to make it happen.”
The king was so happy that he gave the old man a lot of money and sent the horse to him.
A courtier(朝臣) met the old man when he was ready to leave with the horse. He said, “It’s impossible to teach a horse to speak like a man. If you can’t do that, the king will kill you.”
The old man said, “The king gives me enough money to live well in the next few years. No one knows if the king or the horse can live healthily ten years later. However, at least I can live a good life before that day comes!”
