Mount Qomolangma (珠穆朗玛峰) is the world’s highest mountain. How hard was it to climb this mountain about 60 years ago? You can find out by watching the film Climbers. It opened in theaters on Sept 30.
The film tells the real stories of Chinese climbers. They climbed the mountain in 1960 and 1975.
On the northern slope (北坡) of Mount Qomolangma, there is a 30-meter-high cliff (峭壁). No one can get to the top without going over this cliff in 1960, a Chinese climbing team tried to reach the top. The tour members stood on each other’s shoulders to climb the cliff. They didn’t have enough oxygen (氧气) and food, but they still made it to the top. They became the first people to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma from the northern slope.
Fifteen years later, another Chinese climbing team reached the peak (到达顶峰). They spent a whole day building a metal ladder on the cliff. The ladder helped more than 1,300 climbers from all over the world realize their dream of climbing the mountain. The ladder was retired (退役的) in 2008. It is now in a museum in Lhasa, Tibet.
