During the Warring States Period, there was an old man named Sai Weng. He lived with his son near China’s northern borders and he 1． a lot of horses. They both like horses.

One day, a servant (仆人) said to Sai Weng sadly, “One of our horses has gone missing.” After hearing this news, his neighbours came to comfort (安慰) him.

However, he said: “Maybe it’s not a bad thing. Who knows what 2． in the future!” Neighbours felt very funny when they heard the words.

A few months later, when the servant was cleaning the horse farm, a strange thing happened. “Look! Our horse 3． towards us. The missing horse came back with a fine horse from the north.” he said excitedly. Most people came 4． him, but he said unhappily, “Maybe this thing might bring us bad luck.” Hearing this, people felt confused.

Sai Weng’s son was crazy about horses. So he spent a lot of time 5． with horses. He found the fine horse was strong and handsome. So he rode this horse out every day. One day, when he 6． fun riding on the fine horse on the horse farm, he fell off the horse suddenly and hurt his legs. He shouted loudly, “oh...Is anyone here? Please, please 7． me!” After hearing his cry, the servant found him and then took him home. Many People came to comfort Sai Weng again. “Maybe this thing 8． us good luck. He broke his leg, but he saved his life.” Sai Weng said calmly.

Hurting legs was a bad thing, but he thought it might become a good thing. So many people didn’t understand.

One year later, the Hun soldiers invaded (入侵). All young men 9． to join the war. Most young men died during the war. Luckily, Sai Weng’s son 10． horses again since he broke his leg. So he avoided the war because of his broken legs.

Under certain conditions, good things and bad things can be exchanged. Bad things can become good things, good things can become bad things.
