Over the past two years, micro-dramas on online platforms (平台) have experienced a rapid growth in the Chinese market. What is a micro-drama? It often lasts only a few minutes, some even less than 60 seconds for each episode (集). It is typically played on mini-programs or social platforms. For example, micro-dramas like Unrivaled surpassed (超过) ¥100 million in eight days, while Night Shift Diary got more than one billion views. Please, Don’t Spoil Me, played on Tencent Video, surpassed ¥30 million, and the three-episode series Escape from the British Museum trended on Weibo for a long time.

Nowadays, micro-dramas are a new global fashion, and several Chinese micro-drama platforms developed abroad. Reelshort is one of the most popular apps of them. Some people believe that micro-dramas are wonderful with many advantages. They have mixed some elements of online literature and livestreamed short videos in a small structure. The micro-dramas allow audiences to enjoy the episodes without wasting much energy and time. They are easy to get, which contributes to their widespread acceptance, from public transportation to lifts. However, other people disagree. In their opinion,   micro-dramas may have some-harmful (有害的) influences. To get higher clicks and viewership, the content (内容) may be about violence and other unhealthy stories.

Anyway, the future of micro-dramas is worth looking forward to if micro-drama makers improve their content and search for better IPs. More importantly, micro-dramas’ future lies in their mainstream and high-quality transformation, which is also the key to their continuous growth. To make certain of the high-quality growth of this, governments need to strengthen content control. If so, micro-dramas will become better and better.
