We use a dictionary for two main reasons: to find out how to spell a word and to find out the meaning of a word.
All the words in a dictionary are in alphabetical order (按字母顺序). If the first letter of a word is “a”, you can find the word at the front of the dictionary. And you will find the word at the end of the dictionary if its first letter is “z”.
The second letter of a word is also important. For example, the word “act” comes before the word “ant”. This is because the letter “c” comes before the letter “n” in the alphabet. For the same reason the word “bag” comes before the word “bat”. This is because the letter “g” comes before the letter “t” in the alphabet.
If you do not know the alphabet, you cannot use a dictionary, because you may not know how to find words.
One of the most famous dictionaries in the world is Oxford English Dictionary. It gives the meanings and spellings of English words. Most dictionaries do not have every word.
