Bao Bao a 3-year-old giant panda who was born at the National Zoo in Washington, has left for China. She has taken about 25 kg of bamboo with her on the 16-hour flight. Laura Trevelyan reports.

I want to be the cook. First of all, I will prepare some delicious food with barbecue (烧烤) sticks. It’s easy for us to grill(烤) food. Second, oil, pepper, and soy sauce (酱油) are important .They will make food more delicious. Lastly, I will bring enough water for my friends. I’m sure we will have a good time!

I’ll take cards. It will take us a long time to grill food. So playing cards games with friends is a good way to kill time. We can also make a rule in the game. Whoever loses the game has to cook the food! Sounds interesting!

Well, I will make a fruit salad for this party. Barbecues make people feel hot. And eating too much meat is not so good for us. So I think fruit salad will make the barbecue party healthy. I’m sure my friends will love it!

Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new house in Arizona .He moved there a few years ago, and I warned very much to see his now place and meet his friends.

In the earliest memories my father was a tall, handsome, successful man. He loved his work and family, but was uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult .I was afraid of him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s in my study and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to try hard to think up things to say to protect myself.

On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, laughed at my son’s funny talks. My father’s strict rules were gone. He seemed so friendly and interesting to be with us.

The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told many stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m happy with my new friend. My dad, in this new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.

A lot of studies have shown that kind people will have longer and more meaningful lives.

When helping others, you may experience a ‘‘helper’s high’’, a happy feeling born out of your heart. You can get more satisfaction from greater life because of helping others; that means you will be pleased with yourself.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia, Canada, found that helping others could improve one’s physical health. In the Washington Post, Ashley, one of the researchers, wrote that their experiment(实验) has shown helping others can help lower the blood pressure of the old people.

The findings may interest many people but they may have also noticed that society nowadays is filled with mistrust. More often than that, helping others is met with suspicion(猜疑). People may even refuse to accept your kindness.

The good news is, though helping others sometimes may seem unnatural, there is evidence(证据) that it can really make you a better person. And you can make your own decision whether to help others or not.

All in all, if we try to get into the habit of being kind, then at last, we will be used to helping others.

Humans spend about one third of their lives sleeping. We could have used the time to do more important things like eating, looking after our families and working. Some scientists believe sleeping helps recharge(恢复精力) the body. But now a study suggests that we sleep to forget some of the millions of new things we learn each day. Sleeping can help people forget unimportant information.

The research explained that there are dendrites (树状突) in the human brain. They grow and connect at synapses (突触). This is how we learn new things. The larger the dendrites grow and the more synapses we have, the more information we remember. Researchers said that we learn so many things each day that the dendrites grow too large and we become confused (迷惑的). Sleeping helps the dendrites become smaller. We clear out the unimportant information and only keep the most important memories.

The team did an experiment on two groups of mice over a four-year period. One group of mice could sleep, while the other group was kept mostly awake. The team found that the sleeping mice had nearly 20 percent fewer synapses.

Most researchers believe clearing our brains is not the only purpose of sleep. Resting our minds and bodies can stop us getting sick and help digest (消化) food. There is one thing scientists all agree on: a good night’s rest is important for our health and happiness!
