Travel by Foot
Long, long ago, people had only one way to get around. They walked. A person can walk only about 6 km an hour, so people stayed close to home long ago.

Thousands of years ago, people began riding the horses. That way, they could go much faster than by walking. A horse can run up to70km an hour, but not for very long. In Asia, some people used camels to travel in the desert (沙漠) .

Travel on Land
Steam engines (蒸汽发动机) moved the trains at new high speeds. By the late1800s some trains powered by steam engines could go about 100km an hour. In 1908, Henry Ford (亨利·福特) made the cars which changed the world. These cars could go up to 70km an hour.

People have always wanted to travel by air. Hot-air balloons have been used to take people to travel since 1783. Balloons can go about 50km an hour. The Wright brothers(怀特兄弟) flew their first plane in 1903. That is a great invention.
