Why Snails Move So Slowly

Long ago, Sammy the snail carried no house. He moved quickly. One day, Sammy wanted to go to watch the sea. It was a long way away. On the way, it rained. “Oops, I should take an umbrella. It will rain again.” Then, Sammy went back and took an umbrella. Later, he hurt his tail. “Oh, I should take some bandages.” Then, Sammy went back and took some bandages. Suddenly, a bear came by and almost stepped (踩) on him. “Hey, watch out! I should take a flashlight.” Then, Sammy went back and took a flashlight. “I may feel hungry.” So he took some bread and cake. “I may feel thirsty.” So he took some water and juice. “I may feel tired.” So he took a pillow (枕头) and a sofa. “I may feel bored.” So he took balls, books, and puppets (木偶). Sammy worried more and more. There were so many things to take. “Why not take the house with me?” Now Sammy the snail carries his house every day. Thus, he moves slowly.

How to “Read” a Film

We like watching films only for fun. When we watch films in this way, we only focus on (关注于) what is on the screen (荧幕) but don’t think too much about anything else. A film is something we can read as carefully as a book or poem.

Here are some things to look for when “reading” (not watching) a film:

1. The first important thing to do when you are “reading” a film is to not just pay attention to the story plot (情节), or characters, but to how the film is presented (呈现) by the camera.

2. Pay attention to how the movie opens and ends.

3. Pay attention to how the film is edited (编辑) or how it cuts from scene (场景) to scene.

4. Think about the film in acting, music, lighting, sound effects, costumes (服装), colours, sets, etc.

5. Finally, think about how the ideas and themes (主题) of the film help you understand it?

Mark is in the bed. He plays the mobile game (手机游戏). The game has loud music. Mark’s mother and father are in the living room. They sit on the sofa and talk.

“Can you hear something?” asks Mark’s mother.

“Yes, I can hear music,” says Mark’s father.

Mark’s father goes to Mark’s bedroom. “It’s ten o’clock. Go to sleep, Mark.”

“OK.” Mark says.

It’s a fine day. Bob is going to the bookstore with his brother. He puts on his blue shirt and black shoes. They say goodbye to their parents and go to the bus stop. The bookstore is very far, but the No. 6 bus takes them right there. They see lots of books in the bookstore and they buy some books. They feel very happy.

Today is Wednesday. I am so excited. It’s “No Homework Day” in my school. On this day, we don’t have any homework. Because of the “Double Reduction”(双减), I can finish my homework before 7:00 p.m. on other days. That’s really good. After dinner, I usually do some sports. Sometimes I go for a walk with my family. And I go to bed early every day. Sleeping enough makes me healthy and happy.

On the weekend, I have more time to do my favourite things. I like painting and playing basketball. On Saturdays, I often draw pictures in the park. On Sundays, I usually go to the gym and play basketball. It will be sunny this Sunday. I am going to have a picnic with my friends. It will be fun!
