A hotel catches fire, and the people in it run out in their night clothes. Two men, Peter and Ben, stand outside and look at the fire.
“Before I come out,” says Peter, I run into some of the rooms and find a lot of money. People don’t think of money when they’re afraid. When anyone leaves paper money in a fire, the fire burns it. So I take all the paper money that I can find.
“You don’t know my work,” says Ben.
“What’s your work?” Peter asks.
“I’m a policeman,” Ben answers.
“Oh!” Peter cries. He thinks quickly and says, “And do you know my work?”
“No.” says the policeman.
“I’m a writer. I always tell stories about things that never happened.”
