Now One Foot, Now the Other
Part 1
When Bob was a baby boy, Grandpa helped him learn to walk.
"Hold on to my hands, Bob," said Grandpa. "Now one foot, now the other."
When Bob was a little boy, he and Grandpa liked to share stories. "Grandpa, tell me the story about how you taught me to walk," Bob would say.
And Grandpa would tell Bob how he held his hands and said, "Now one foot, now the other."
Part 2
Grandpa got sick in the spring when Bob was 10 years old. He stayed in the hospital for a long time. When Grandpa came back home, he couldn't walk or talk.
From then on, Bob went to Grandpa's room after school every day. He read stories to Grandpa and talked to him. After 3 months, Grandpa could talk a little.
Part 3
One day, when Bob was reading a story to Grandpa, Grandpa said slowly, "You. Me. Walk."
Bob stood in front of Grandpa. Grandpa held Bob's shoulders. Dad came to help, too.
"Grandpa, now one foot," said Bob. Grandpa moved one foot.
"Now the other." Grandpa moved the other.
Part 4
In the next spring, Grandpa could walk around the house with Bob's help, and he could talk better.
One day, after walking, Grandpa and Bob sat on the sofa. Grandpa said, "Bob, tell me the story about how you taught me to walk."
"Well, Grandpa, you held my shoulders. Then I said, Now one foot, now the other. And ..."
